Pinky the Champion Athlete!

This little Pom, seems as cute as a squirrel, but she's definitely topped the list for most athletic in the events of high jump and hurdles. She also loves to snap at anything that flies and craves for fruits over meat!

Pet's details

Name: Pinky De Zoysa
Breed: Pomeranian
Age: 7
Owner: Sudakshi & Nivandi De Zoysa

What's the significance of the name you've given her?

There is no significance actually. Pinky lived in our house some time ago before we settled in. So the caretaker of our house was the one who named her. Sadly, we had no say in it.

What is a typical day like for Pinky?

Pinky is sort of like my “alarm”. For, when she barks I know it’s high time for me to get up too. She pokes her wet nose through the grills and once she is in the house she patiently waits for her morning delicacies; a cup of yoghurt (preferably CIC yoghurt) and fruits (pieces of papaya or mango). Her day is mostly spent chasing away flies or any flying creature that irritates her. I assume she spends some hours of the day, staring through the fence at her neighbouring doggies, wishing she was out with them. We sometimes have the fortune to observe the most unusual visitor in our garden; a peacock, whom we believe flew from his territories to break the monotony of his day. Little did the peacock know that his arrival breaks the monotony of Pinky’s day, for she makes it her “self-presumed” duty to chase the peacock to wherever he came from thus entertaining us in return with his performance. Note that she never harms the peacock, she just doesn’t want him stealing our attention from her, I guess.

What are mealtimes and bathtimes like?

Pinky behaves well when it comes to her bathing hour. What’s interesting about her is the moments we have when we serve her share of the meal. She’d simply sniff around and if the meal is a bit too warm, she is patient enough to give it some time and then eat. But no, she’s constantly interrupted by a few flies buzzing around and she wouldn’t continue to devour her meal till she’s done chasing all of them. Little does she know that her attempts at chasing them off are hopeless! Nevertheless she’s very cute when she does that!

Does she do anything out of the ordinary that fascinates you?

Everything Pinky does fascinates us. Sometimes she has her little escapades into the neighbouring houses and visits her doggy friends. But I find it ridiculous to be standing in front of the gate till she’s done greeting her friends with “hello’s and how are you doing’s”. So I just close the gate and return to my work only to see her return in the most unexpected way possible. Particularly my sister and I were not just fascinated but astonished when we saw her climbing the little green fence (that surrounds our house) and jumping over to the other side! Yes, she’s Pinky the High-Jump Athlete!

What annoys her the most?

The random flies that buzz around annoys her the most. Once she learnt her lesson to let those flying creatures be, when she one day accidently tried to catch a flying creature, only to realize it was a bee and it stung her nose. Poor Pinky.

What is her most favourite fun time activity?

Her fun time activity is collecting the freshly peeled mango seeds and enjoying them. To explain why she does this, Pinky is the kind of doggy who’d instantly choose a piece of fruit (most preferably slices of mango or papaya) over a piece of meat.

What is the naughtiest thing she has done?

Once she suddenly and forcefully grabbed a slice of papaya from my sister’s plate, while she was too busy watching TV. I can’t really blame Pinky for that, because she must have thought; “If she’s not going to eat it, then at least, I must”.

How did you find her?

The caretaker of our house gifted her to us.

What is she most afraid of?

Snakes. She’s scared of snakes.

How does she react when you returned home after a long day?

Believe me when I say so, when I go home, she’s the first to greet me with the endless barking and licks on my legs. I feel that no one else in our home welcomes me better, not even my own sister. She welcomes every member of our family with the same enthusiasm she showed the last time she did it. It never changes. It is so real.

What's makes her the best?

Her consistency with overwhelming love to all members of our family, is what makes Pinky the best! When she happens to be naughty once in a while, we would threaten her, but the next moment, she would be jumping around, loving us as she always does.

What was the most unforgettable moment and you shared with her?

Pinky is a huge fan of cricket! Though she doesn’t understand that the batsman should strike before she should seek the ball, she continues to be a very useful fielder. For, when the ball goes into the most inaccessible places, she would somehow crawl in and find it for us. So playing cricket is the most unforgettable moment we have with her.
