“What does your Mum do?”queried Mala.
“Oh. She stays at home. She is just a housewife!”replied Asela.
“You mean she cooks, cleans and works at home though she is not paid a salary. You must recognize the work she does and call her “A Homemaker”. After all, if she stops working, your whole family will go phut. What if she stops washing clothes or cooking thrifty meals?” said Mala.
“I know. If you book in to a hotel, you would pay for the services like clean sheets, spotless toilets etc. Then you value it because you are paying for it. But at home, a housewife is considered ordinary.” chimed in Pushpa.
“It’s because now most women go out to work and earn a salary like the men. Then they are called “Breadwinners”. Their work is recognized because it has a monetary value. But someone has to stay home and look after the baby and that work is not paid for.But if you hire a nanny or a servant, you would pay for the services.” said Mala.
“I know. And the hired help won’t do as good a job as the homemaker!” said Pushpa.
“I like the word “Homemaker”. It has a cosy, homely ring to it. I will tell my Mum that from now on, she is no longer a housewife but has the proud job of being a Homemaker!” said Asela.
“That’s the way to spread the word. So all you housewives, down your saucepans unless you are given a proper title!”said Mala.
Let’s value all Homemakers!!!
