Marmite is a brand that we have all grown up with – my fondest memory of Marmite is on toast with butter or with coconut sambol in a sandwich. But Marmite and chocolate was not a combination I would have given much thought to.
With culinary trends around the world changing dramatically in terms of interesting and unusual flavour combinations Unilever Sri Lanka has joined hands with celebrity chocolatier Gerard Mendis to create Chocolate-Mite – chocolate filled with a Marmite ganache. The chocolates are available exclusively at Gerard Mendis Chocolatier (58A Horton Place, Colombo 7) and come in dark, milk and white chocolate.
“This was both a challenging yet fun experience. With international chocolate trends venturing with Salted Caramel and Chilli Chocolate, I was delighted to partner with Unilever and marry Marmite with Chocolate,” Mendis stated, adding, “The flavour is novel and different and even avant-garde at times. It allures you and grows on your taste buds and then there’s no turning back."
Bianca de Silva, Brand Manager – Marmite, Unilever Sri Lanka stated, “Generations of Sri Lankans have grown up with the taste of Marmite. Its savoury note can also be used as a relish or as a yummy ingredient thus making mealtimes magical.”
The launch of these Marmite filled chocolates was held on Tuesday October 13 at Gerard Mendis Chocolatier where invitees were given the chance to taste this novel treat as well as cookies with Marmite in them. Even though the extreme saltiness may tend to put you off, you should try it out as it is a very interesting combination of flavours.
