22 years, 22 long years it took, to make a movie that’s a sequel at heart to the original Jurassic Park released in 1993. Boasting a new cast, a new story and a completely new dinosaur (Hint Hint I-Rex) in addition to the ones we know and love…and hate and are completely afraid of. But how does Jurassic World stand up against the original Jurassic Park and its completely lesser sequels? Let’s find out.
First things first, let’s forget that the sequels happened, So there was no “The Lost World : Jurassic Park” or “Jurassic Park III”. Why do I say that? Because Jurassic World is the true sequel that not only honours the original but builds upon it and propels it further into brave new territory.
Two brothers are sent for the weekend to visit their aunt, who happens to be the Operations Manager at the all new Jurassic World, a dinosaur theme park built on Isla Nublar by InGen. Where a new hybrid breed of dinosaur is cooked up in a lab called the “Indominous Rex”, as expected the I-Rex is accidently unleashed from its containment unit and all hell breaks loose.
Jurassic World, plays a lot of things right, bringing together the perfect tone of nostalgia as well as keeping everything fresh. Managing to do all this is Director Colin Trevorrow widely known for his movie “Safety Not Guaranteed” (2012). Having co-written the movie along with a few others Trevorrow has managed to keep the dialogue good, the plot quite relevant and the pacing quite steady. Pushing the idea brought by the original movie to this year right in the 21st century and making it work and feel relevant is no easy task. But it’s a task beautifully handled by the team.
Everything from the music, to the setting and locations, to the CGI, to the animatronics, to the design seem meticulously detailed, and that is something highly commendable, especially in this day and age where a queen riding her dragon can look quite unimpressive (I forgive you for being a TV show, you know who you are).
The fresh new cast seems very well put together, current global hunk Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Nick Robinson, Ty Simpkins, Vincent D’Onofrio, Irrfan Khan, Omar Sy, B.D. Wong, Jake Johnson, Judy Greer and so on! The relativity of what each character brings to the movie in terms of character worth is great.
Jurassic World ends up being a truly splendid sequel. It makes fun of itself when needs to (never over does it), and keeps the action and plot on a good balance. If you were a fan of the original, this is a movie you don’t want to miss, especially in 3D. Take your kids too, you’ll either terrify them (I hold no responsibility) or make them fall in love with dinosaurs.
Jurassic World is currently screening at Liberty Lite, MC Platinum and Empire Delux, all in 3D.
