views 3033Ganga Iddamalgoda used to pack her meals in jars for convenience for when she took lunch to work, and these usually consisted of light salads and/or pasta salads which she’d refrigerate and then take out just before meal times, empty the contents into a dish and simply dig in. Soon, she started doing the same for her friends and they convinced her to start a small venture selling salads in jars going by the name of Jar Jar. It’s been a few months now, and Ganga says the response has been quite positive.
“I usually experiment with the salads and get my friends to try them out, and see what tastes best to add into the range,” she explained. Currently Jar Jar offers soup mixes in two variants – lentil and squash, snack mixes in banana and oat and a nutty trail mix, and the salad range features chicken caesar (usually includes an addition of the raw egg but customers can request for it to be made without), chicken noodle, prawn, an egg and bacon, ham, soya bean and ham, tabbouleh, three-gourd (features snake gourd, bitter gourd and ridge gourd), shredded spring salad, tomato salad and a sweet salad range which includes dragon fruit, gooseberry and star fruit.
That’s not all. Jar Jar also does healthy puddings and cakes and currently customers can order a low calorie banana cake, spiced/unspiced pumpkin pie and a gooseberry crumble. Ganga wants to introduce healthy pudding mixes to the range but she is still experimenting with recipes and tweaking them to perfection, to see what works best. She uses little to no wheat flour and tries to avoid refined flour as much as possible.
The salads are healthy and quite ideal for weekday lunches if you feel like rice and curry isn’t what you like. Having sampled a prawn and spinach noodle salad, which included chopped lettuce, tomatoes, onions, coriander and roasted peanuts, I found the combination quite filling, and delicious – simple flavours of the steamed prawn and noodle going very well together.

When making an order, you can request for the jar(s) to be delivered to the Playtrix Sports Bar and Café located at CR&FC. Salad jars are available for purchase at Playtrix everyday too. Ganga requests that customers make their requirements when making orders in case you’re allergic to any ingredients used in the salads. Delivery is available for 7 jars or more for an entire week (1 jar for each day), anywhere within Colombo city limits. The salads can be left unopened for a week, but refrigerated. They are vacuum sealed to ensure freshness and pre-ordering is important since the salads are made fresh everyday! Jar Jar is on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/jarjarmeals.
