Run and keep running for the rest of your life, or pass it along, because it follows...

Horror movies, a genre I only a see at least one, two or mostly none in an year that truly stands to the name of it. And here comes “It Follows” bringing together a young adult cast that usually spells disaster in most horror movies, but how does “It Follows” stand up against most movies that claim to be horror? Let’s find out.

“It Follows” feel like a warm pizza, but in a new flavour. So you know you’ve got the warm and good cheese and crust that could either taste good depending on the other ingredients thrown in together, or could taste horribly bad. The other ingredients that went into “It Follows”? They make it taste good!

Jay, a college student, goes out on a date with a boy named Hugh, where later towards the end of the night they have sex in his car, passing along a ‘curse’ of sorts that makes ‘It’ follow the next person. He explains the rules. It will always follow, if it catches up, it will kill you, so you either run away, or pass it along to another person by having sex with them, and if it gets that person, it will come back after you. And only you can see it. It can take the shape of a stranger or anyone you know.

Bringing in elements from various other horror movies that don’t generally work, Director/Writer David Robert Mitchell manages to knit a tale that feels fresh and more importantly one that works. The writing is precisely paced without it feeling too fast or slow burning (though the slow burning horror works nicely). With him being known mainly for his previous film, the coming of age tale, “The Myth of the American Sleepover” (2010). The design is another commendable aspect of the film with everything from the colour tones, to the costumes to the locations and props being intricate and well thought of.

The performances in the film helps compliment the script as well. While not the best out there it’s still remains good with the cast consisting of Maika Monroe as Jay, Keir Gilchrist, Ollivia Luccardi, Lili Sepe and Daniel Zovatto.

It Follows is a good horror movie, one that feels very welcome, and ‘It’ in the movie could be a reference to anything out there so take out of it what you may, for the topic most people think it tackles it leaves a good something to think about. If you do have a chance to see this movie, don’t pass it along, add it to your lineup and have a horror movie marathon with your friends.
