On this week’s Home Hints we introduce to you living spaces of people like you and me, who can inspire you with their creativity and enthusiasm in making their homes a pretty sight. We feature their favourite section in their own homes and their advice to you on how they mastered that envied look that their interiors have.

Having worked for 14 years as a banker, Mrs. Menique Fernando’s aspiration of becoming an interior designer became a reality when she successfully completed her Diplomas in Interior Designing. Though a major portion of her time is now devoted to teaching Art and English to primary students, her keen interest is to create beautiful interior spaces and accessories that highlight them. The interior spaces of her home in Battaramulla were created by her and she speaks to Daily Mirror Life on how she perfected these looks.

“I have created the spaces in our home, following a simplistic theme while bringing in nature into the spaces.”

“The water body in the form of a pond opens out into the main spaces of our home. The sitting room, main living space used as a TV, reading or socializing area and the dining room, opens out into the pond. There are plants on one side of the long, rectangular pond, while plants hang down from the plant troughs on the first floor, creating a form of a natural curtain. Two rows of steps made of ‘miris gal’(rough granite) lead into the pond. The rough granite & the plants create a very cool atmosphere in our home. When energy efficiency has taken spot light, my home has been created in such a way that light filters in and fills our home till late in the evening. As one steps in, he is introduced to the cool breeze, the warmth of sunlight and the music of the birds together with the sound of the rippling water. A significant facet of my home is that though our home is situated close to the main road, it gives us the tranquility of a natural environment.”

“I have used minimum colours on the walls to retain simplicity. I have used white on all walls, green on one small wall space facing the pond and greenery, black on all pillars, cut and polished titanium cement (a very light  shade of grey) for the floor with black cut and polished border around all floor spaces, while the dining room has a kumbuk (wooden) panel floor with black cut and polished border around it.”

As I have not used colours on the walls, I was able to use a lot of colour through accessories. I have brought in vibrant colours such as maroon, red, shades of orange, pink, mustard and brown, through cushions, curtains, wall hangings, candle stands etc.
