Sausages: Is the legacy going to end?
Sausages and other such products appeared in headlines as it was found that they could lead to serious non-communicable diseases as reported by the Ministry of Health. With this there was quite an uproar about this move and consumption has therefore reduced drastically. Taking this in to consideration, the Daily Mirror Life spoke to a few individuals to consult their opinions on this matter.
Sriyani
Children are quite fond of it. I think it is a good move that the authorities have sent in a warning.
Nadeesha
Sometimes it is inconvenient for those with busy lifestyles because sausages and other instant food are quick meals that they can prepare.
Bhagya
I used to love sausages but I will not eat them hereafter.
Kumara
We don’t know what sort of meat goes in to them. Finally people now don’t have a risk.
Vihanga
They are of course unhealthy but children are quite attracted to these kinds of food products. The proper action has been taken and I am glad about it.
What is bad about them?
· The nitrites and nitrates in the sausages are identified as cancer-causing compounds.
· All red meat also contains a red pigment called haems, which, once in the gut, can be broken down to form N-nitroso compounds, or NOCs, many of which are known to cause cancer.
· Additionally, haems may irritate or damage the cells lining the bowel, which can lead to them dividing more rapidly.
· Cancer Research UK says that there isn't, at the moment, any convincing evidence to show that eating fish or chicken, smoked or un-smoked, increases your risk of cancer.
