The arts and crafts of the Himalayas are unique and highly desirable, but are almost impossible to find in Sri Lanka. This will change in the festive season as the Hermitage debuts their extraordinary new Crafts of Kathmandu collection. It makes available a diverse trove of lovingly selected mountain treasures right in the heart of Colombo.
The collection abounds in variety, reflecting the multiple threads of culture, philosophy and tradition that weave together in this mystical region. Just a few of the highlights: Tibetan prayer wheels, Vajra brass thunderbolts, Phurba ritual daggers, Himalayan singing bowls, highly collectible Thangka silk paintings, and magnificently carved antique windows. A selection of this breath, depth and nature has probably never been seen on our shores before.
The Hermitage has long been renowned for bringing in rare items from exotic places. This unassuming little shop has become a magnet for people seeking out the rare, the curious, and the exquisite. For over a decade, the proprietors Safiya and Yasmin have been combing the world in search of such bounty. Their Rajasthani furniture, Balinese statuary and Indian silver jewellery are now legendary.
The Crafts of Kathmandu collection is now in stock at the Hermitage, 28 Gower Street, Colombo 5. Opening hours are from 9am to 6pm daily. For more information, call 2502196 or 0773 572737.
