While on a quest to unfold the inland beauty of the southern coastline, we visited a charming hotel which was once known as the ‘Sumanagiri’ Walawwa in Kaikawala, Induruwa.
Cocoon Resort Induruwa interlaces a centuries old architecture combined with modern sophistication for a fun filled vacation just about an hour and a half from the city bustle.
About a century ago, the hill in the midst of the former Cinnamon Plantation was called ‘Sumanagiri’ by the local inhabitants.
We were greeted by the pleasant and prompt staff members with a Cinnamon Iced Tea to refresh us after the journey from Colombo. According to Rohan Outschoorn, Resident Manager, the hotel is designed for both business and leisure travel.
I couldn’t help but to notice a large number of local travellers indulging in the Cocoon experience.
The hotel offers 27 luxury villas and rooms spread over 8 ½ acres, including individually designed and beautifully decorated 11 Villas and 16 Silk Rooms. The 16 Silk Rooms are located closer to the restaurant in duplex buildings.
Each consists of four Standard rooms. The ground floor rooms open out to a private verandah while the upstairs rooms open out to a balcony with garden views. Ensuite bathrooms are equipped with Jacuzzi baths.
We were ushered to our ‘Red Silk’ room in a motorised gold cart, which was located in a duplex overlooking the lush greenery of the property. I must say, the interior had a rather South Asian feel to it and they were fitted with all modern conveniences.
All rooms and villas provide a king sized luxury bed, fully stocked mini bar, 24 hour room service, internet, cable television with luxurious bathrooms featuring designer fixtures, lush robes and fine toiletries.
Cocoon Indulgences
Cocoon Resort possesses signature restaurants that offer an exceptional dining experience including a mix of Sri Lankan, Indian and Western cuisines.
We dined at the main restaurant with soothing lobby music to dress the evening.
Dinner
We started off with a Chicken Appetizer and mixed juicy greens and tomatoes.
Verdict: Simple and juicy
The appetizer was followed by a Potatoe and Leek Soup
Verdict : Rich and creamy, perfect start to a wholesome meal
It was time for the main course and I opted for Lamb Chops.
Verdict: The spices were well balanced and it didn’t drown the rustic taste of the meat. Delectable!
Lunch
It’s always a pleasure to savour in wholesome rice and curry for lunch.
This time around, it was an aromatic yellow rice served with scrumptious accompaniments including a luscious tandoori chicken curry which was my favourite.
Verdict: Wholesome and the flavours were well preserved.
Recreation
The large swimming pool helps you catch up on a sunny fun filled afternoon with your folks and friends. You could simply relax at one of two swimming pools located within the estate or rejuvenate at `The Bath’ – a wellness centre with a spa and fully equipped gym.
The spa offers a range of relaxing Ayurvedic massages and beauty treatments while a traditional Sri Lankan dance or performance is showcased at the `The Stage’ in the same facility depending on the guest occupancy at the hotel.
If you’re up for some beach time, the hotel arranges a special shuttle service to the private beach located 3 kms away.
The large lush garden also is a perfect place to just sit for a casual chat or catch up on some reading. There is plenty of secluded seating spread across the garden.
