One of those standard “night time nibbles” among most of us is kottu rotti. The best and cheapest option would be to run down to your “night kadei” and grab one of your choice. Another among the many kottu options in the city is Chop Chop Kottu. Situated down Castle Street (the same premises as Gonuts with Donuts) this drive through has a small menu, which includes kottu rotti and string hopper kottu.
Taste – 3 stars, Value for money – 4 stars
The kottu rotti as well as the string hopper kottu is light on the palate and comes with a lot of karapincha leaves as well as a generous helping of meat. We tried out the Crab (Rs. 420) and Prawn Kottu Rotti (Rs. 420) as well as the Sausage Kottu Rotti (Rs. 360). All three were flavoursome. The Crab one was exceptionally tasty while the Prawn Kottu didn’t have prawns per say but lots of shrimp instead. The Sausage Kottu was average in taste but filling.
We also tried out the Egg String Hopper Kottu (Rs. 360) and the Crab String Hopper Kottu (Rs. 420). They too tasted like your average road side string hopper kottu but with fresher ingredients and more meat. Taxes are added to the price while you can get it delivered to your doorstep, for an additional Rs. 50. They also do a Vegetable one (rotti or string hopper, either for Rs. 360). All the kottu options come with a side of gravy, which is a little more milkier than the average watery ‘kadei’ gravy.
As much as they were all tasty and filling, mind blowing they were not. The fact that they had different/uncommon flavours, is what will make them an interesting and welcome option in among the dining options in the city.
Friendly staff and service – 5 stars
The call centre staff and delivery guy were extremely polite and the order was accurate and delivered in no time.
