Backpacking around the world for the last nine months Shoki spent three weeks in Sri Lanka which he says he adores. He has a particular penchant for ulundu wade and pol rotti. Now travelling in Europe Shoki says he will return to Sri Lanka again to discover vistas of the island he missed the first time around.
Why do you love travel?
I love sampling different varieties of food and this journey is sort of a global cuisine adventure. I am also hoping that I may meet my life partner during my travels although I did not have much luck in Sri Lanka!
Your favourite travel destination and why?
Thailand and Sri Lanka both for the spicy food which is second to none.
What do you need for a perfect holiday?
Lots of good local restaurants and cafés that serve authentic food. As I'm backpacking I also look for clean and safe hostels.
In which country have you felt most at home?
In Thailand as I spent three months touring the country.
Most unusual souvenir you have brought home?
I always buy cloth flags of the country I'm visiting and sew it on to a t-shirt but sadly I found none in Sri Lanka. If anyone can send me one via this writer I will be a happy person!
Worst holiday or travel experience?
Losing my wallet and cards in Mumbai and to have my bank tell me that I can collect the replacement cards from Istanbul which was one of my destinations.
Best piece of travel advice?
Just go with the flow and speak with the locals to get the best tips. Take each day at a time and remember travelling is a journey not a destination.
Your top five travel destinations?
Thailand, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Vietnam and Laos.
What has travel taught you?
To be less impatient and appreciate your own situation.
Which country did you taste the best ever cuisine?
Thailand and Sri Lanka where I lived eating ulundu wade and pol rotti. They were just so tasty.
Next travel destination?
Romania.
