A wave of shimmering blue took to the stage as soloist Mayanthi De Silva opened the night for Caprice presented by the all girl choir group Asteria at the Lionel Wendt last Saturday evening. The choir took its audience on a journey through the melodies of then and now and the transition was transparent and seamless.

The guest performances added to the splendor of the evening as renowned musician Rukshan Perera performed acapella for the very first time with a female choir. Asteria completed the challenge successfully clad in their brightly coloured sarongs that helped bring out a Sri Lankan touch to the performance.

The Old Joes’ choir mesmerized the audience with their perfect vocals in the songs ‘Some Nights’ and ‘Don’t stop believing’ which proved to be favourites of the audience. The group of 20+ lads were in absolute tune much to the contradiction of their choir name ‘Old Joes’ that tricked the audience as well as the hosts for the evening as they turned out to be a group of fine young men!

The band ‘Journey’ rocked the stage and kept the audience going as they made everyone participate in their performance by having them sing along as well. The audience, varying from mature to young enjoyed every bit of it as they clapped and sang their hearts out…
The night ended with Asteria performing their own rendition of some of the popular R&B and pop songs of today complete with well coordinated choreography.

The choir and the guest performers did a fantastic job and special mention is to be given to the three soloists – Mayanthi, Prashalini and Shevanti who were no doubt the favourites of the audience.

Caprice was directed by Mahen Peiris, attorney-at-law and former founder member of the ‘Revelations’ and was supported by the beautiful Prashalini Peiris together with Asteria – the all girl choir group of past pupils of Methodist College.
