When at first you sink your teeth into a spoonful of strawberry vanilla cheesecake by Buttercup Cheesecakes, all you can think about is that it feels like it’s made with love, happiness and all things nice (yes, just like the starting lines to the Powerpuff Girls cartoon - sugar, spice and everything nice). Funnily, the owner of the home based cheesecake venture has a striking personality - bubby and cheerful, and I truly believe she injects all of that positivity and cheeriness into the cheesecakes she bakes so lovingly.

The Food Factor learns that Buttercup Cheesecakes is just a little over a month old, and so far, the response has been really good. “I’ve been so blessed, and starting this has been such a positive step in my life,” gushed Pavithri Meepegama, owner of Buttercup Cheesecakes. She says she’s always loved feasting on cheesecake, and that it’s a dessert she’s mastered in baking over the years. She really had no intention of starting a cheesecake business but she’d baked one for her friend Manesha Peiris (of Délicieux fame), and she had loved the soft, creamy texture of the cheesecake, and kept pushing Pavithri to start a business until she eventually gave in and created a page for the goodies on February 14.

The menu is small and simple and features vanilla cheesecake, along with a chocolate one, and customers can pick between a chocolate or vanilla crumb base. The current favourite at Buttercup Cheesecakes is the vanilla cheesecake with halved or sliced strawberries on a strawberry compote topping. Other varieties include the triple chocolate cheesecake, strawberry chocolate cheesecake, the strawberry triple chocolate cheesecake and the blueberry cheesecake.

Pavithri’s just introduced cheesecakelets to the menu, and they are miniature cheesecakes with the same favourite toppings. A pack of the assorted cheesecakelets includes two vanilla cheesecakelets with strawberry topping, two vanilla cheesecakelets with blueberry topping, two vanilla cheesecakelets with chocolate ganache, two chocolate cheesecakelets with strawberry topping, two chocolate cheesecakelets with Chantilly cream, and two chocolate cheesecakelets with chocolate ganache. She also plans to introduce a KitKat based cheesecake soon, which she’s currently working on perfecting.

Cheesecake is generally a rich, heavy dessert but surprisingly, this cheesecake is light and just right in terms of texture, flavour and sweetness. It is the quintessential home baked cheesecake, something you’d expect your mum to bake with love and a secret ingredient. Pavithri uses locally sourced cream cheese to make the cheesecakes. She will also be selling the goodies at a stall at the Visakha Vidyalaya fair in the first week of April, so if you plan on dropping by, do make a beeline for the stall.

She requires a minimum of two days notice for an order, because cheesecake requires 24 hours to set properly. For daily updates, please visit Buttercup Cheesecakes on Facebook, @ButtercupBundy on Twitter and buttercupbundy on Instagram.
