‘Bollywood Meri Hai’, an amateur musical presentation by the boys and girls of the Development Centre managed by the Child Protection Society was staged at the Auditorium of The British School in Colombo recently.
The stage set was a haze of bright colours. It was like a many textured fabric woven with different colours and threads. A typical Indian village scene was created, with a fruit cart, a DVD shop and windows with bright curtains. The show opened with a classic love song from the 90s ‘ek ladki ko dekha toh’.
More classics from this era such as ‘Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jana Sanam’, to latest hits like ‘Manwalaage’ a popular song from the movie ‘Happy New Year’, ‘Lungi Dance’ and Medley from ‘Ram Leela’ were performed by these children. It was evident that the audience was really enjoying the show by the sound of clapping and singing along. Lata Mangeshkar’s ‘Chanda Hai Tu’, from the all time favourite movie Aradhana, an old classics which is still loved by all, was performed by the girls of the Development home with some of the solo parts sung by Thisara and Vihari.
The showstopper was when little Milky, the baby of the girls team, cradling and rocking a little baby doll sang her solo of this song. There was pin drop silence in the audience when everyone held their breath to listen to this spectacular voice. The energetic dancing for the curtain call was to the famous ‘Om Shanthi Om’, when again the audience cheered and clapped along. Some of them got up from their seats and were dancing.
Most importantly, what everyone in the audience noticed was that each and every one of these little children had a smile on their faces throughout their performance. Dressed up and looking awesome in their bright coloured costumes, they looked so happy in their moment of stardom.
The show was choreographed by M.B Imran of Imzy’s Dance Loft fame. The children were trained to sing by Thilini Rodrigo Yadhav of Nadhya School of Music, together with up and coming young singer of the new generation, Ridma Weerawardene.
‘Bollywood Meri Hai’ has helped these children to recognize and acknowledge talents they never knew existed. The mere knowledge of that fact has brought about a new sense of self worth and pride in the lives of these children. Their new outlook and positive attitude has totally taken over and the children have a sense of joy within them, that they say, they never knew of.
