Ah another Disney movie, didn’t Frozen come out like four days ago? NO? Oh wow and it’s a based on a marvel comic too. Hello there humble reader of reviews, if you’re questioning whether to watch Disney’s new movie Big Hero 6 you’re in the right place. That and if you’re bored and like reading.

Like most of you I wasn’t initially aware of the comics, but upon reading up after the initial trailer was released I loved this little family (friends really,  but aren’t the closest practically family) of superheroes that are quite unlike the usual. Set in a beautifully designed city that is a mix of San Francisco and Tokyo  literally named San Fransokyo  it tells the story of young Hiro Hamada who’s practically a genius and a robotic prodigy as he goes underground bot fighting with his all battle winning little robot that he had built himself. His highly attractive brother Tadashi (yes this is animation) talks to him about where his life is heading and tries to pursue him to join him at college and introduces him to his wacky friends, But its Baymax, Tadashi’s invention to help human kind’s healthcare needs that stick with both Hiro and the audience (reminds me a little of Toothless and Hiccup from How To Train Your Dragon.)  Baymax later goes on to be Hiro’s right hand buddy, his guardian and partner in crime (well not crime, they’re superheroes).  Hiro’s invention which he uses to prove his worth to join the college however falls into the wrong hands, and thus a villain is born. I can’t really say much without delving into Spoiler territory, especially as to why finding out who the villain is, and why he needs to stop him is important. (Yeah, go watch the movie).

It’s beautiful how Disney is moving away from themes of romantic love of the movies of yesteryear to a more platonic love with friends and an unconditional love brought on by family kind of theme with its latest  animated offerings. Maybe they’ll evolve even more in movies to come. The movie does have a wonderful cast consisting of Ryan Potter as Hiro Hamada, Scott Adsit as Baymax, Daniel Henney as Tadashi Hamada,T. J. Miller as Fred, Jamie Chung as GoGo Tomago, Damon Wayans, Jr. as Wasabi, Génesis Rodríguez as Honey Lemon and Maya Rudolph as Aunt Cass.

The movie’s writing is solid even though we reach the overseen moments that are now a given with superhero movies and animated movies in general and some of the scenes do feel dialled down because it is a Disney movie after all.

The music, oh the music, composed by Henry Jackman is just divine, it thrills and saddens and brings joy and despair, it’s beautiful and perfect for the movie. The stand out track is easily Fall Out Boy’s “Immortals”. And the attention to detail in terms of animation is both painstaking and breath-taking.

All I can say right now is go, right now, go see this movie with your whole family, it’s honestly a welcome breath of fresh air after Disney’s Frozen.

I give this movie an 8 out of 10 on the AasifOmeter.

Big Hero 6 is currently screening at Majestic City Superior 3D, Empire Deluxe 3D, Skylite Matara 3D  & Savoy 3D.
