Welcome to ‘Ask the Vet’ where we consult Dr. Dassanayaka on FAQs that worry most of us who own pets.

FAQ - Between long working hours and being a mother, sometimes my life tends to get a little crazy especially after adding my two energetic Labradors to the picture! Since they are both male dogs with a heightening sense of energy, they crave meals at all odd hours. I’m wondering what the ideal time to feed them is and how often? Will giving in to their appetites trigger an unhealthy dietary pattern?

Since you own two Labradors, I recommend that you feed them one sizeable healthy meal a day. Labradors are well known for their vigorous behaviour as well as their huge appetite. They can eat anything at any given time of the day! Don’t give in to their cheeky, pleading looks as over 90% of Labradors in this country tend to be overweight. Canine obesity is parallel to the human population so it’s important that you feed them accordingly and avoid sweets especially chocolates as chocolates are toxic to a dog’s diet! In addition, it’s vital that they receive the appropriate amount of exercise as well. Hope this helps.
