Our 6 year old dog is constantly scratching or licking herself trying to rid her annoyance with a skin condition she is frequently faced with. We usually don’t attempt to tie her or cage her and she runs and plays freely which could be worsening the situation? Kindly let us know what causes this and what we can do to avoid this from repeating quite often.

Recurring skin infections are among one of the most common forms of health problems dogs face. A healthy skin coat on a dog is a crucial determinant of a dog’s health in general. However, 80% of Sri Lankan dogs are subjected to various forms of skin diseases ranging from mild to acute levels requiring a lifetime of treatment.  Why this is such a common occurrence is mainly related to an imbalanced diet and exposure to tropical organisms we are faced with, particularly in this region of the world. As you mentioned, your dog is not tied and is at liberty to wander around which will undoubtedly magnify the problem at hand since she may even come in to contact with other canines carrying contagious skin diseases. When the dog’s skin is already at a sensitive level, it is advisable to restrict her movement patterns to a large extent and make sure she receives a healthy diet!
