Trekurious Launches Artist’s Table with Jagath Weerasinghe

Trekurious together with the Saskia Fernando Gallery presents Artist’s Table, a series of private dinners aimed at providing enthusiasts and collectors with an opportunity to dine in the company of some of Sri Lanka’s leading artists.

The conversation that takes place at a dinner table with good food and wine is always more intimate and personal, the aim of these dinners is to enable guests the opportunity to meet with Sri Lankan artists on this level and provide them with the opportunity to learn more about their work and lives.

The first Artist’s Table at the Saskia Fernando Gallery will be hosted by renowned Sri Lankan artist Jagath Weerasinghe, one of Sri Lanka’s leading contemporary artist and an important player in the islands contemporary art scene. Jagath Weerasinghe’s own art, mostly as a painter and draughtsman, is deeply informed by his society’s actions.  His work examines and critiques Sri Lankan anxieties, responding to collective attitudes – as he identifies them, taking themes such as nationhood, religion, identity, and confrontation for commentary.  The artist’s work reflects his unresolved dialogue with his subjects, as shown through a number of series of recurrent themes.

The Artist’s Table experience gives you the opportunity to indulge in conversation with Jagath Weerasinghe as he takes you on a journey through the exhibits on display at the Gallery.  During the course of the evening, you will also learn more about his work as well as the life and role of an artist in this rapidly changing sphere.

Jagath Weerasinghe is pivotal to the exposure of contemporary Sri Lankan art, and has been a significant driving force in its development since the early 1990s. Recognizing the need for a cohesive framework for his peers at this time, he coined the phrase the ‘90s Trend’ to describe artistic activity. He co-founded the Theertha International Artists Collective in 2000, which continues to foster new artists and initiatives.

The Artist’s Table with Jagath Weerasinghe will take place on September 26 from 7pm onwards at the Saskia Fernando Gallery.
