“Compliments in disguise”
It was a nice layover in München. I always enjoy the great Bavarian food & beverage; way of life is always welcoming in Germany, even in the gloomy winter season.
This time I didn’t drop by the infamous “Hofbrauhaus” for dinner. Instead had a lazy day at the hotel & fell asleep for almost 14 hours. However it was time for the return flight and I was dreading going back to work, as it was lead by finicky seniors.
One of the best perks of being an airhostess is I don’t get to work with the same boss every day, nor the same people; saves the stress of pulling my hair out on a daily basis. Yet there are flights that you do want to jump off the plane and get some fresh air to breath. And most of the time it’s the people you work with who drive you crazy, than the people you cater to.
30,000 feet above the cabin is pressurized, air is circulated, contaminated, and congested. In this claustrophobic environment, it is a rare chance that you will meet people at their best condition. And when you fly for longer periods, I guess it is normal to be bewildered. In some parts of the world, air crews are not allowed to testify in court cases, and today I learnt why.
The fussy manager on my flight, made sure that each and every air hostess got their idea of conducting a service is indifferent to rocket science. Luckily I had a good team, working as one, meeting up to the German standards, rest assured we will all be getting good appraisals and happy passengers.
The day went well, and it was time for feedback, and suddenly with all the left-handed compliments flying around, I couldn’t figure out exactly whether it is a compliment or not!
All passengers disembarked happily. They were all smiles, and personally thanked each one of us. At the end of a satisfying day of hard work, this is what the manager could have said about me: “Oh you did so well, met all the service standards, excellent communication skills!’
instead he went on ranting about how awful I look; “You did well, How do you keep yourself so slim? But you know you are too skinny, you should eat up, and do you do any exercise?” Now how that’s even relevant?
Love, Dany
