Taking the Plunge - Bungee Jumping in Sri Lanka
Jumping from an enormous height with nothing but a harness and a strong elastic rope to secure you has as much appeal as playing Russian roulette with a fully loaded revolver for some, but for thrill seekers who have done a bungee jump, the rush of adrenaline as they jump down and the excitement they derive from such a daring escapade is inexplicable.
For the first time in Sri Lanka, bungee jumping will take centre stage at Waters Edge over three days from January 8-10. The main attraction is the 160ft bungee jump which will be carried out using a crane. 160ft is roughly the height of a 15-16 storeyed building. For those who are scared to jump on their own they will be able to do a tandem jump where they can jump with someone they trust or who has jumped before.
Introducing these activities to Sri Lanka is Yohan Fonseka, Founder and CEO of Agile Events who gave up his job to start his own company to bring adventure sports to Sri Lanka. “The Sri Lankan youth is limited with options when it comes to activities to do during their leisure time with friends. They are always stuck between going to a movie, going paintballing or gokarting” explains Yohan.
“The average thrill seeker is fed up of doing the same old activity over and over again. Therefore we at Agile Events wants to introduce a new adventure activity, a one off event, for the first time in Sri Lanka hence this bungee festival. Apart from bungee jumping, there will also be activities ranging from fun and leisure activities to other adventure activities, which will give the Sri Lankan youth a novelty experience that they never have experienced before” Yohan added.
However if jumping from a height of 160ft scares the living daylights out of you then there are other activities that will give you an adrenaline rush, such as the Human Hamster Ball where a person can go in to a massive sphere and start running on water. The tricky bit is trying to stay on your feet. The Electro Rodeo Bull is also fun and provides the thrilling experience of riding a bull sans its angry nature.
For those who want to tick off a bungee jump from their bucket list, then instead of doing the 160ft bungee jump there is a mini bungee which is from a much lesser height. For the sharpshooters who want to test their skills there is a BB gun shooting range while a punching machine provides a chance for strongmen to test their strength.
Brought to Sri Lanka in collaboration with DIMO Tata Genx Nano, the bungee jumping is conducted in Sri Lanka by the UK Bungee Club who have been specially flown down to Sri Lanka to manage the event. Sticklers for health and safety, the UK Bungee Club will oversee all aspects of health and safety and ensure the jumps are done in a safe, secure and controlled manner.
Eagerly awaited by many thrillseekers, this event will no doubt require nerves of steel and absolute resolve!
