I’ve always been a huge fan of Mexican food because of how flavour-rich it is, so when I came across Taco Isle while mindlessly scrolling through Uber Eats one day, I was excited to try it out. The cloud kitchen concept has been slowly but surely pervading the local food scene, and Taco Isle is the newest addition to the list.

“There’s nothing like a burrito at the end of a long day, but there wasn’t anywhere to get one!” the folks at Taco Isle shared, when asked why they decided to start a Mexican food cloud kitchen. “We are big big fans of Mexican food and noticed there weren’t many places offering high-quality Mexican food. We know Sri Lankans like to be experimental and try out new cuisines and we were confident we can make an impact in this space.” They’re not wrong. In the past few years, Sri Lankans have been able to savour multiple new cuisines thanks to brave restauranters willing to take the risk. Risks that certainly seem to be paying off.

“Mexican food shares a very similar offering to Sri Lankan food. Bursting with flavour and full of spice, it complements the Sri Lankan palate extremely well, so we knew it would be a hit! Mexican food offers something for everyone: incorporating beans, rice and an array of vegetables into our burritos and burrito bowls offer a healthy, nutritious meal for the health-conscious customer whereas our Quesadillas are loaded with cheese for that perfect cheat meal! We also offer vegan alternatives to all our dishes with our bean protein, complemented by our very own vegan sauce!”.

“We presently offer three protein options in tacos, burritos, and burrito bowls: chicken, prawn, and bean, as well as a choice of one of our three sauces: Spiced Aioli, Tomato Salsa, or Green Chilli Cilantro, all of which are created fresh in-store.”

I tried their Tacos and Chicken Burrito Bowl. First things first, kudos to Taco Isle for not using plastic packaging. While this should be the norm, even today, few restaurants are plastic-free. Tacos are generally messy, but I was happy to note that it was neatly packed and survived delivery to end up in my hands with no battle scars. The Tacos were soft shell and generously packaged with meat and fillings. The chicken and the prawn taco each comprised the usual vegan slaw, pico de gallo, lettuce, and cheese. It was love at first bite - the burst of flavours, and the satisfying crunch combined the best of both worlds, making this one of the yummiest tacos available in town.

The Chicken Burrito Bowl included Mexican style chicken, spiced rice, cooked beans, bell pepper, lettuce, vegan slaw, pico di gallo, jalapenos, cheddar cheese and cilantro served with sauce. Each spoonful was delightful and simply delicious, and will definitely have you devour it. The chicken was well flavoured and all the ingredients came together perfectly. I love cheese, but I was glad they’d used just the right amount of it in both their Tacos and Burrito bowls.

I loved everything I tried here and every time I’ve ordered since, I’ve found their food to be consistent - consistently tasty and generous. For those of you who are vegetarian or vegan, they have both Tacos and Burritos/Burrito Bowls that feature beans. For now, their offerings are limited, but they’re hoping to introduce many more items soon.

So if you’re in the mood for some yummy Mexican food that is hearty and delicious, look no further than Taco Isle. Do note that since it’s a cloud kitchen, there’s no dining in. Unsurprisingly, Taco Isle appears to be well-received among Sri Lankan foodies. “The reception to our food has been incredible! With customers frequently being left with food that has exceeded their expectations, and our impressive UberEats rating of 4.8/5 is reflective of that!”.

Find Taco Isle at 23, Alfred House Gardens, Colombo 3 (next to the Shiro Hana). Contact them directly for pickups or order through UberEats! They’re open everyday from 12 noon to 9pm.
