Weekends - Sunday in particular are meant for indulgences of the grand kind.
FLOW at Hilton Colombo Residences launched their Sunday Brunch this past Sunday, and customers and guests at the hotel are most certainly spoilt for choice, with the lavish spread of items – perfect for tucking into on a lazy Sunday with family or friends. The only problem here is where do you start? Do you delve straight into cereal and fruit? Or toast and accompaniments? Or sushi, salads and starters? The five open kitchens at FLOW ensure that guests are treated to a multi cuisine spread.
Appetizers include salmon gravlax, tuna carpaccio, tomato bocconcini caprese, and an assortment of salads. Additionally, there’s a section dedicated just to cold cuts, with assorted pickled vegetables, and a salad bar right next to it, where guests can get a salad of choice done, choosing from fresh vegetables and salad dressings. The Caesar salad at FLOW is tossed in a giant parmesan wheel to ensure that the flavour is retained in the salad. Should you wish to start your meal with warm soup accompanied by freshly baked bread, you can tuck into a hot and sour seafood soup or a roasted pumpkin soup with coriander. There are six different varieties of breads and buns.
The Japanese corner features three varieties of sushi, tekka maki and kappa maki, California rolls, and slices of fresh tuna, sea bass and salmon sashimi, all of which can be accompanied by soy sauce, wasabi paste, and pickled ginger and cucumber. The sushi and maki have been prepared excellently and make an ideal starter. An Indian corner complete with naan, tandoori chicken, mutton rogan josh, dhal makhani, Malabar fish curry and vegetable shashi korma can be found right next to the Chinese corner, which features a selection of steaming chicken and prawn dim sum, fried rice and noodles, and a most delicious prawn toast – best eaten with a generous drizzling of sweet and sour sauce.
The teriyaki shoe lobster is a must try with the sweet flavours of the teriyaki sauce coming through excellently. Tempura prawn, prepared next to the shoe lobster is another must try dish. The Western section features a pasta station, where you can pick from four different types of pasta and the sauce with which to cook it, in addition to a delightful carvery with beef strip loin with Hollandaise sauce and a red wine jus, and a baked modha fish with champagne beurre blanc.
Suwandal rice, red rice, lagoon crab curry, black pork curry, tempered dhal, a dry beetroot curry, mango ambula, and a mukunuwenna mallung make up the Sri Lankan section. The lagoon crab curry easily steals the spotlight with its fresh crab cooked in a spicy gravy with murunga leaves and spices leaving you teary-eyed but wanting more.
Right next to the dessert section is the pastry pillar – four shelves of assorted Danish pastries, croissants, muffins, doughnuts, banana cake, orange cake and brioche.
The dessert spread is impressive to say the least. I honestly wished I hadn’t gorged as much on the starters and mains because by then, I was quite stuffed but still didn’t stop me from waddling over to the dessert section.
Featured this Sunday were trifle chocolate brownie slices, a rhubarb caramel chocolate torte, lemon meringue pie, passion fruit crème brûlée, chocolate doughnuts, miniature Canadian crepes stacked in a pile of three with a berry cream sandwiched in between each layer, assorted cupcakes, fresh fruit tarts, chocolate caramel tart, in addition to jars of meringues and marshmallows. A waffle and pancake station is also available for anyone craving either – a comforting staple at any brunch. An interesting twist to ice cream – FLOW features a little station where customers can pick from vanilla, chocolate or strawberry along with a choice of crushed Oreos and chocolate chip cookies, slivers of almonds, fluffy marshmallows, chocolate chips, and chocolate sauce and get an ‘ice cream kottu’ done.
The Sunday Brunch at FLOW is from 12pm to 3pm every Sunday, and is priced at Rs.3500 nett; a promotional package inclusive of special beverages is priced at Rs.4950 nett per person. For reservations and further information, contact FLOW on 0-115-344644 extension 635.
