Samitha Wijayasekara of ‘The Wedding Flowers Pvt. Ltd’ is introducing something very new and innovative into the floral industry. A concept that’s a massive hit around the world, she plans to introduce ‘Wearable Art’ for the first time ever in Sri Lanka.
What exactly is wearable art?
‘Wearable Art’ is a type of jewellery that is made out of wires, flowers and other accessories. Making beautiful, simple jewellery and creating fresh floral design as a form of wearable art involves a lot of techniques on my part which I have developed over time and experience as a floral designer.
What kind of special training did you take to be able to do wearable art?
This is always a passion of mine so I travelled around the world to attend training programs conducted by world renowned floral designers and it has given me the opportunity to enhance my talents and widen my knowledge about the field of floral. So now I can provide my clients with personalized décor and design services to suit for a wide spectrum of events.
Tell us the process of making wearable art.
So I basically use different types of wires, beads, crystals and others to resemble foliage in different varieties of flowers. The designs are exciting and colourful and undoubtedly unique so it will suite absolutely any occasion from elegant events to weddings!
How is wearable art applicable to the wedding attire?
So ‘Wearable Art’ can be used for both bouquets and bridal outfits. The bouquets would be really light weighted and I think that’s so important today from a bride’s point of view because both the bride and the bridesmaids face numerous issues and difficulties carrying heavy bouquets so this would be such a brilliant solution to it.
As for the brides outfit, instead of using heavy ornaments and accessories, these wire accessories can be created in the same manner and effect in a much classier and unique way to match the exact colour of the bridal outfit.
Wearable art is a different alternative to wedding jewellery - what’s so different about it?
I think the main thing is that it’s flexible because you can use it for something a lot more than just bridal jewellery. The main advantage is that it’s unique and can be customized according to the design the customer requires.
How do you plan to launch this concept to brides?
Wearable floral accessories are popular among European countries, where brides who prefer customized and outstanding unique jewellery are fascinated by these techniques. With experience I can say that Sri Lanka is also a country seeking for new concepts and unique designs. I feel floral accessories would have a huge impact on the floral industry. In terms of launching this concept, I’m planning of having a bridal show to elaborate the idea behind wearable art which will be helpful for couples to get to know about this fascinating art and maybe even use it for their special day!
