Resonance - A Concert By The Methodist College Choir

The senior choir of Methodist College mesmerized the audience with their performance on the 10th of May at the Lionel Wendt auditorium. They performed a wide variety of songs that proved to be very entertaining.

The choir made a dramatic entrance with a song from the ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and continued to perform Broadway songs from Andre Lloyd Webber’s productions like ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘Evita’ and ‘Cats’.

This was followed by a lively and energetic performance of old time religion gospel songs. They managed to get the whole audience swaying to the sounds of ‘Down By The Riverside’ and ‘I’ve Got A Home In Glory Land That Outshines The Sun’.

The performance of ‘Adiemus’ was absolutely beautiful and full of emotion. This was followed by ‘Amavolovo’ an upbeat African tribal song which kept all of us at the edge of our seats as it was performed so energetically.

The famous Disney song ‘Let it go’ from the movie Frozen was also performed by the choir. They also did a Taylor Swift medley, a beautiful rendition of Miley Cyrus’ song ‘The Climb’ and ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.’ The audience which also comprised of students really enjoyed it.

The highlight of the evening for me was the Beatles medley. (This could be because I am an ardent fan.) ‘Michelle’, ‘Yesterday’, ‘Yellow Submarine’ and of course ‘Let It Be’ were some of the famous songs that were performed. The audience was definitely surprised by this choice of songs but I could say that they truly enjoyed it.

They also did a medley of songs from ‘Grease’ which was very entertaining and had all of us clapping along!

We also treated with unique renditions of some local favourites like ‘Atha ran viman thulin’, ‘Ganga addara’, ‘Tharuna jeewithe’ and ‘Kale ukele thiyala’.

Metho Cantanti, the old girls’ choir also brightened the stage by performing Broadway songs like ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ and ‘Do You Hear The People Sing?’ from Les Miserables and ‘Defying Gravity’ from Wicked. The second set they performed included famous pop songs like ‘See You Again’, ‘Hello’, ‘Counting Stars’, ‘Whip Nae Nae’, ‘History’, ‘Uptown Funk’ and many more.

The concert definitely delivered on their promise of it including a huge variety of songs. A special mention must be made of the choreography and the emotions displayed by the choristers. It was brilliant and amazing to watch these young students perform with such excellence. They left the audience both speechless and awe struck and received a standing ovation.
