When you hear of Oktoberfest I’m sure it’s the Hilton Colombo that comes into many people’s minds. That is probably because this festive event was made popular to the people of Colombo by Hilton Colombo. Year after year for the past 24 years, this entertaining event which goes on for over a week brings about a great deal of fun and frolic to the people of Colombo, and also for the many who visit our city during this period of festivities. 

As we walked into the giant marquee that could have accommodated around 500 people, we were definitely not disappointed. Everything I expected having been to this event year after year were all there and it keeps getting better with each passing year. The authentic German food, lots of brew, Bavarian music, German entertainment, competitions, games and a festive ambiance is what you can expect if you drop in at this celebration. Dancing on tables is also a common feature which I usually enjoy watching but unfortunately missed this time, as I had to leave early. 

The band in their very elaborate colourful attire made a grand entrance and livened up everyone’s spirits with their punchy music. There were some ladies of the troupe who were dancing with each other too. This is one event which really lifts up your spirits and makes you want to get up and dance. The casualness and positive vibe all around would make even the most serious person loosen up. 

The spread at the buffet was mouthwatering. The feast of exotic Bavarian dishes were delicious. As we walked along the line of the buffet there was the counter with a wide range of different types of bread, the colourful salad counter had various types of salads and then there were all the other dishes which included German sausage, smoked cold Bratwurst sausage, traditional German white sausages, braised beef with red wine and vinegar, pork knuckles, sauerkraut and giant pretzels. The elaborate dessert counter was also filled with German desserts. 

A special mention must be made of the warm hospitality of the people of Hilton Colombo. They made sure that the guests were comfortable and enjoying themselves. 

If you have not yet gone for Oktoberfest, there’s still time. So hurry and don’t miss this awesome time of fun!
