The Musicmatters Jazz Trio comprises of Borey Shin (piano), Sumudi Suraweera (drums) and Isaac Smith (double bass) will perform this Sunday at 1864, Galle Face Hotel from 12pm to 3pm at the Sunday Roast. Being highly competent musicians, the trio performs a wide range of jazz standards at an outstanding level, making the trio a novel experience for audiences in Colombo.
Borey Shin is a pianist, improviser, composer and electronic musician with roots in the Downtown New York scene. He was trained as a jazz pianist but also plays accordion and analog synthesizers in varied musical contexts. Borey Shin has performed and collaborated with a diverse range of musicians including Ted Reichman, Tanya Kalmanovitch, Shahzad Ismaily, Anthony Coleman, Carla Kihlstedt, Daniel Carter, Joe Morris, Gerry Hemingway, Susie Ibarra, and more. In the summer of 2010, he performed at the Moers Festival in Germany as a member of New York based band, Super Seaweed Sex Scandal. He also freelances in many New York and Boston based bands. He has a Bachelor's degree from the New England Conservatory in Contemporary Improvisation and a Master's degree from the New England Conservatory in Composition.
A jazz percussionist with a background in ethnomusicology, Sumudi Suraweera is an extremely pro-active musician. He obtained his PhD in music in 2010 from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. His research focused on Sri Lankan Low-Country traditional drumming. Prior to this, he completed a Bachelor of Music in jazz, majoring in drums, with first-class honours. While living in New Zealand for over ten years, Suraweera performed with New Zealand groups and artists such as Departure Lounge, Mundi, Solaar, The Crust, Fiona Pears and Greg Malcom in some of the main Arts and Jazz Festivals around the country. Since his return to Sri Lanka in 2010, he has played an instrumental role in establishing the creative music school Musicmatters and the annual Musicmatters Festival in order to nurture original music in Colombo.
Isaac Smith is a New Zealand born musician, Double Bass player and composer with a passion for improvised and creative music. Having extensive experience across a multitude of performance based artistic disciplines, Isaac has cultivated and encompasses a unique, integrated approach to music and teaching with a deep interest in addressing many philosophical, practical and personal aspects of learning and performance. Isaac holds a bachelor of Jazz Performance Double Bass from the New Zealand School of Music and currently resides in Sri Lanka as the foreign instructor at Musicmatters.
