Feast the Indian way

Indian cuisine has always been a favourite among us Sri Lankans. Situated in the heart of Colombo is Maharaja Palace, an elegantly built restaurant serving traditional North Indian cuisine. Over the years, this restaurant has been known for its exclusive specialties making it a potential competitor for others in the business. Led by the expertise of Chef Mohamed Abubakar the culinary team has been trained to serve its dishes with attractive presentations and quality.

We decided to dine in at this venue and checkout their specialties.

Ambience

Once you enter this restaurant complex it gives you an impression like you are walking in to a typical Hindustani palace. The ground floor comprises a spacious seating area and in the first floor guests can have private functions such as executive or family lunches and dinners.

Food

Beverages

To start off with, we had their Strawberry Lassi (Rs. 375) and the Maharaja Faluda (Rs. 400). The Strawberry Lassi was a perfect mix of yoghurt and a fruity strawberry flavour while the Faluda was presented well with kulfi ice cream and rose-flavoured milk shake. Both these beverages were absolutely tempting and are recommended for those with a sweet tooth.

Starters

For starters we picked the Chicken Tikka (Rs. 850) which was a plate of boneless chicken cubes marinated in a blend of yoghurt and tandoori spices. It added a spicy start to our main meal.

Another special feature of Maharaja Palace is that guests get a complimentary basket of Papadam and chutney along with a plate of raw onion rings and green chillie. There are three varieties of chutney which are sweet and spicy.

Mains

It is quite a challenge to decide on one dish at Maharaja Palace as the menu is royally attractive. The Maharaja Chicken ‘Dum’ Biryani (Rs. 975) is one of the best-sellers at Maharaja Palace and was recommended as our main meal. This dish is prepared with boneless chicken cooked with aromatic spices layered with saffron-infused basmati rice, cooked on a low heat, also known as ‘Dum’ style. A mutton curry and raita – a traditional Indian yoghurt mix which comes as an accompaniment, complete the main meal.

We also had their Butter Naan (Rs. 250) with mutton curry which was once again a tempting combination.

Desserts

For dessert we Gulab Jamun (Rs. 450) which is the Indian version of warm donuts floating in warm sweet sugar syrup. It was quite tempting and is a perfect finish for your meal. Other desserts include Kulfi, carrot halwa, ice cream and fruit salad.

Service

Clad in traditional Indian clothing, the staff is quite attentive and friendly. They are at your service from the time you sit at this restaurant till the time you leave.

Overall

Maharaja Palace stands out as one of the best North Indian restaurants in town. They recently received the prestigious A* Award of Excellence in recognition for their food safety and hygiene. For those who like to dine in, could visit the restaurant and have an enticing meal with your family. They also offer delivery and outdoor catering options for parties, weddings and other events.

Note: All meat products served are Halal certified and no pork or beef products are served.

Rating: Very good
