views 2619This week too we met a group of fabulous home bakers who make up Love Bites. This smooth home run operation creates some of the most fabulous cakes and desserts you will come across. Using top quality ingredients and taking the utmost care in preparing their varied range of items, Love Bites is hands down one of my favourite places for desserts and no frills cakes.
The brains behind the operation which create these wonderful treats are Tanya Goonewardene and Buddhike and Natalia Payoe. Tanya and her brother-in-law Buddhike followed the Advanced Certificate in Baking at Prima which was from where they learned the finer points in making perfect baked goods while Tanya’s sister Natalia assists them through every area of the operation especially in baking their famous Chocolate Suicide cake. In spite of having full time jobs they take on orders with a passion to serve the best treats.
Taste and value for money (6 stars)
I rarely rate my reviews above five stars but Love Bites is a whole different story. From soft choux pastry to perfectly baked cakes and scrumptious toppings with just the most amazing balance of flavours, I could fault nothing I tasted.
Among their chocolaty range is the Chocolate Suicide (Rs 1,500-half/Rs 3,000-full) which comes with the option of dark or milk chocolate or both. This simple cake which is chocolaty all round is moist and rich yet beautifully airy while the aspect that really stands out is how it isn’t overly sweet therefore enhancing the depth brought out by the rich dark chocolate – the star of this cake.
Another of my absolute loves was the Strawberry Milky Way (Rs 2,500) – their take on the Tres Leches. It has a cheese cake like texture but still maintains a soft feel on the palate while the use of four types of dairy instead of three make it a beautiful cake/dessert, which is the ideal accompaniment after a heavy meal. It is so light in texture and sweetness and can also be topped with Peaches, Grapes, Stewed Pineapple or Cinnamon.
They also bake delightful cupcakes of which the Tiramisu Cupcake (Rs 80) was stunning. The spongy yet moist coffee cake topped with an espresso-infused whipped cream topping was so fantastic on the senses. It was so similar to having tiramisu but it was a cupcake!
And if you like your ‘After Eights’ post dinner you will definitely love their After Eight Cupcakes (Rs 80). Even though mint isn’t my favourite flavour this cupcake is really something special. The cupcake is made using a rich chocolate cake and topped with a buttery, light, bright green mint frosting.
Among their choux pastry range are their sinful yet light Nutella Cream Centred Chocolate Eclairs (Rs 80-standard/Rs 50-party size) and it is no wonder it is their best seller. These beauties can also be customised to include white chocolate, pink glaze or coffee glaze toppings.
Love Bites also bakes angelic Cream Buns (Rs 80). The rich vanilla pastry cream which fills this cream bun make it a classic tea time treat but can be indulged in at any time of the day. You can also opt for a whipped cream filling.
Note:
Love Bites are extremely responsive on Facebook and this is their preferred mode of communication.
A minimum order of 10 is required for cupcakes, eclairs and cream buns.
