The young lady behind this little bakery is Ashmita Wijesinghe (20) an aspiring chef. Her passion for anything food resulted in her following the Advanced Fundamentals in Baking at Prima after completing her Ordinary Levels at Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya and while studying for her A/S Levels at Ladies’ College, Colombo.
Upon completing internships at the Hilton Colombo and Cinnamon Red and working at Eat Right, she felt she could take on some baking on her own and Little Miss Shortcake was born.
Taste and value for money - 4 stars
We tried out two out of the three varieties of mud cake cupcakes (Rs. 160 each and Rs. 2,000 per kilo) by Little Miss Shortcake and my pick was the Mud Cake with Almond. The flavour of almond wasn’t overpowering while it complemented the intensity of the gooey dark chocolate cupcake perfectly.
I also enjoyed the deep chocolaty notes of the Chocolate Mud Cake. The other was the Mint Mud Cake which we completely forgot to try out!
The Passion Fruit Cake (Rs. 2,000 per kilo) was the ideal balance of tart, sweet and creamy. The passion fruit custard and moist butter cake were the perfect light combination. It being a light option, you may find yourself diving in for seconds.
Ashmita is also trying out a healthy range of which the Healthy Breakfast Bar (Rs. 150 per piece), consisting of honey, peanuts, sultanas, raisins, butter and desiccated coconut is quite delicious and will certainly be the ideal pick-me-up in the morning or the perfect midday snack.
The Brownie (Rs. 2,000 – without ganache and Rs. 2,400 with ganache) were chocolaty but slightly over baked on the day.
While the Chocolate Chip Cookies (Rs. 75 each), even though they were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside didn’t have the oomph I was looking for.
