It all started three years ago, when Tamara Raymond started selling her (now famous!) Fire Starter (nai miris sauce) at the Good Market. Eventually she started selling a line of juices (with a king coconut water base) and then realised it was the ideal time to sell some healthy food items too. It was with this that Life Food was born and they now have their own ‘little’ outlet at the Good Market Shop on Reid Avenue.

Taste and Value for money – 5 stars

Among the wide range of items on the menu at Life Food is their filling and delicious Granola Cup (Rs 500). Served in a large, glass it is packed with layers of homemade granola, strawberries, mango, banana and yoghurt, and topped with a healthy sprinkle of nuts and sultanas.

Another light yet power packed meal is their Strawberry Salad (Rs 500). The salad contains mixed greens, strawberries, avocado, cucumber, feta, caramelised cashew nuts and served with a yummy strawberry dressing.

Life Food also dishes out a super open sandwich – the Avocado Super Lunch (Rs 450). A brown multi seed roll is the base of this sandwich while the two fillings include mashed avocado with feta, coriander, freshly squeezed lime, chilli flakes and topped with crunchy bread (it is quite similar to guacamole)  while the second filling or topping is a fresh tomato and onion salad.

Tamara says one of their best selling items is the Omelette Roti (Rs 300). A soft atta flour wrap is stuffed with a Sri Lankan omelette, fresh coconut sambol and homemade tomato sauce.

One of my favourites was the simple yet delicious Toasted Egg Sandwich (Rs 450). A homemade bun is packed with an egg made sunny side up, melted cheese and a chunky tomato and onion jam.

They also have a range of Japanese Hand Rolls which change so remember to ask them what is on offer for the day. We tried out the Prawn and Avocado with Spicy Mayo (Rs 325) and Spicy Tuna with Cucumber and Scallions with Spicy Mayo (Rs 300) which were pretty decent.

Among their refreshing line up of juices made with king coconut water and sweetened with kitul treacle are the Mango Booster (Rs 270) which contains mango, passion fruit and ginger as well as Melonpash (Rs 250) which has watermelon, passion fruit and ginger and my favourite – as it was so very refreshing, the Hydrator (Rs 230), which was made with lime and mint leaves. A more dessert-like, yet healthy and filling option among the drinks was the Strawberry Oatmeal Smoothie (300ml – Rs 325 and 500ml – Rs 425) which has a dash of kitul treacle to sweeten it and consists of banana, oats, yoghurt and almonds.
