views 771We may love food, but turns out we know very little about them. So we scoured the internet for some fun food facts and we were not disappointed. Here are some you probably never knew before.
- Dynamite is, believe it or not, made with peanuts. Peanut oil is processed to produce glycerol which is used to make nitroglycerine, one of the constituents of dynamite. Nevertheless, this is not the only process used to make dynamite; there are many others.
- You will be surprised to know that lemons contain way more sugar than strawberries do.
- Ever wondered how the caffeinated power of coffee was discovered? An Ethiopian legend claims that a goat herder witnessed his goat's energetic behaviour after snacking on the berties of the coffee plant. He ended up trying the berries, subsequently experiencing the same effects.
- Peanut butter may not sound as appetizing when you realize what goes into it. For every 100 grams of peanut butter, the FDA allows an average of 30 or more insect fragments and 1 or more rodent hairs!
- Skip coffee for apples maybe? And for good reason - apples are said to be more proficient than coffee at waking you up.
- The combination of lemon and fish actually has its origins in the Middle Ages. At the time, it was believed that lemon juice would dissolve small fish bones that have been swallowed accidentally.
- Mock bananas were a thing way back during WWII. Food was being rationed in England at the time, so “bananas” were made from boiled turnips, sugar and banana flavouring.
- The popsicle was created by an 11 year back in 1905! Frank Epperson had left his drink with its stirring stick on the porch overnight. He found it frozen to the stick the next day. He shared what he called an “Epsicle” with his friends and later his family. The name popsicle came from his own children though, who called it Pop’s ‘sicles - the same name that Frank soon patented.
- Ancient Egyptians actually worshipped onions and buried them with their pharaohs. They also presented baskets full of onions as funeral offerings.
