The Goldblock building situated down Hunupitiya Lake Road is home to one of the finest Italian restaurants. In operation for a mere two weeks the place was a buzz when we visited.

Ambience – 5 stars

The food is fantastic but it is the view, a nearly 360⁰ view of the area in and around the Gangaramaya Lake area, along with a casual, laid back atmosphere that makes this restaurant stand out among other Italian restaurants in the city. The glass, wood and steel structure, designed by PWA Architects, gives it a sleek look and feel, allowing you to draw in from the setting around you while enjoying some delicious Italian fare.

Speaking to Janaka Wimalananda, the proprietor of Il Cielo (as well as of Loon Tao and Tsing Tao) he said, he briefed his architect, Philip Weeraratne on what he wanted – the feel of dining in a restaurant in Europe while also maintaining a relaxed feel and this was the result, he explains, “He managed to create exactly what I had in mind and I am thrilled,” Wimalananda explains and adds, “Even though it’s a very up market, fashionable place, I want people to come here casually and not for a treat.”

Taste and Value for money – 4.5 stars

The mains which included the Penne con pancetta e fagiolini (Rs 950) and Spaghetti al Pomodoro (Rs 790) were simple (as they should be) and delightful.

The former with smoked bacon, green beans and fresh tomato was wonderful. The latter was our vegetarian pick that of beautifully cooked spaghetti bathed in a traditional tomato and basil sauce and dressed in oodles of delicious extra virgin olive oil.

The dishes here are all traditional Italian ones, there are no gimmicks and it is pretty obvious when you dig into them, like the Pollo alla cacciatore (Rs 1,050). The tender stuffed chicken with mushrooms, olives and pepper, gently baked in white wine and rosemary and then served with potato cubes was lip smacking.

In terms of pizza we tried their Speciale (Rs 1,560) which was topped with loads of prosciutto cotto, mozzarella and mushrooms making it one of the finest pizzas I have had.

The desserts were where I was slightly disappointed. I went for the Tiramisu (Rs 490) which was a little too dry for my liking however the Torino Al Cioccolato (Rs 490) –  a molten lava chocolate cake with a liquid filling and served with English cream was lovely.

It is clear that they pay a lot of attention to the ingredients – all the sauces, creams, cheeses, cold meats, pizza flour, balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil are imported from Italy, while the breads, pastas, gelato and desserts are made in house, this I feel is what makes this restaurant stand out from the rest, in addition, Executive Chef Massimiliano from Florence and his team really know their stuff resulting in some delectable, traditional Italian dishes.
