We dropped by their main outlet at Queen’s Road to taste some of these delicacies.
The Cherry Brandy Cake (1kg Rs.2200/-) which can even pass off as an ideal dessert was undoubtedly my favourite. This is a chocolate sponge cake base with the conventional chocolate butter icing, topped with the full Maraschino Cherries and a generous helping of nuts sprinkled all round. The cherry sauce that’s poured over it makes the cake itself really soft and juicy. You can clearly get the distinct flavour of the brandy that’s added as well. The blending of flavours is awesome. If you’ve had this once, you are sure to keep on ordering this. Visually also it is very pleasing to the eye, so I would say it’s an ideal choice when you’re visiting friends and you are wondering what to take.
The Lemon Curd dessert is also something out of the ordinary. The sweetness of the touch of icing blended with the lemon yoghurt gives mixed signals to the palate which is delicious.
The simple basic coffee cake and Swiss roll they offer is also super. For someone looking for a coffee cake that still has the conventional flavour, here’s where to go.
They also have some yummy cupcakes (large Rs 100/-). The range is Vanilla, Chocolate and cream cheese topped Red Velvet. Of these, I would opt for the Vanilla.
I was told that some of the other desserts that were popular and fast moving were the Cold Cheese Cake, a blend of yoghurt and strawberry glaze (1lb – 100/-), Tiramisu (1lb- Rs 1400/- ) Devilled Choc Mousse (1kg - Rs1500/-), La Bamba Black Cherry Chocolate Mousse Gateaux (1kg - Rs1980) and the Double Choc Valentine ( 1lb – 1500/-).
Speaking to us, Nalin Fernando partner and main man behind this operation said this was originally his mother Manel Fernando’s idea when she started her home baking operation for the family. Nalin’s sister Nimarla handles the pastry section. Other than the above mentioned, the products and services of Divine has expanded into diverse areas, all of which is listed on their website given below.
The best thing about Divine is, you don’t need to order days ahead. Within a couple of hours they can turn out most of their cakes. Hence that’s a convenient option when you have not had time to plan ahead.
