Cake Walk is the brainchild of Priyanthi Perera who explains to us that she uses only high quality imported ingredients and stressed that she always uses butter (bought locally) when whipping up her icing.
She makes standard cakes like Ribbon Cake, Butter Cake, Coffee Cake and Chocolate Fudge Cake while also making Sri Lankan classics like Rich Cake and Love Cake and variant from the latter called a Rich Love Cake which has been a recipe passed down from her mother-in-law. These aside she also creates customised cakes for any occasion! Priyanthi learned the basics of baking from an aunt and followed a course conducted by Mallika Joseph in making sugar flowers. So all you see on her customised cakes are made by her from the intricate designs created with fondant to the colourful flowers.
Taste and Value for money – 3 stars
In general Cake Walk cakes have that homemade feel which is always a plus while not being sickly sweet. The best out of what we tried was the Chocolate Fudge Cake with Meringue (Rs 1,750). This is said to be one of their most popular cakes that of a chocolate fudge cake sandwiched with freshly made meringue. I loved the gooey and slightly crunchy feel of the meringue in between the moist chocolate cake. This combination is a definite plus but I would have preferred a more gooey/fudgy chocolate cake in general.
I also quite liked that Sri Lankan birthday party or afternoon tea classic that of Ribbon Cake with Vanilla Butter Icing (Rs 1,350). This cake was soft and moist while the butter icing was light and creamy. Priyanthi also does a Ribbon Cake with Almond Paste (Rs 1,700) which I quite enjoyed.
We also tried her Rich Love Cake (Rs 2,000) and Wedding/Christmas Cake (Rs 2,500/Rs 2,250). What makes the former different from the Love Cake we are all used to is the addition of raisins. I am very much a traditionalist when it comes to my Love Cake therefore it didn’t quite tickle my fancy but for someone adventurous or even used to this, it may be an interesting try. The Christmas Cake or in this case, Wedding Cake had a generous amount of fruit and cashew nuts cut into large pieces and was served with almond paste on top (just like the customary Sri Lankan Wedding Cake) and it was not half bad though I prefer finely chopped ingredients (this too, is a personal preference and by no means should take away from the quality and taste of this cake).
Note : Orders need be place three to five days in advance for Rich Cake and Love Cake and two days in advance for Chocolate Cake and Butter Cake.
