When I called to place the order, Anjali Wickramasinghe, the proprietress of Anjo’s Dips and More informed me that she was just making a fresh batch and my jar would be ready later that day. I had to exercise some restraint and wait till breakfast the following morning to indulge in the Bacon Jam and the wait was certainly worth it.
The Bacon Jam by Anjo’s comes in a handy jar and contains 275g of the product. Anjali uses back bacon and I did notice that all the finely cut and fried pieces of bacon contained no fat which was a real bonus. Neither was it oily which was another plus point.
Armed with two slices of hot buttered toast, I slathered lashings of bacon jam on it and instead of gulping it down, I took time to savour the taste of the bacon jam. It was fairly easy to spread, however, if you are taking it from the fridge I would advise keeping it at room temperature for about ten minutes to make spreading it that much easier.
The flavour of the bacon jam was bursting with a sweet and salty combination of bacon and onions. It was a welcome change from the sweet jams that I sometimes indulge in. Although there were notes of sweetness, this was cut by the salty flare from the bacon.
Feeling slightly peckish towards the late afternoon I decided to indulge in more of the delightful bacon jam, this time sandwiching it between cheese and tomato in a toasted sandwich. What an absolute explosion of flavours that was, and one that I would highly recommend.
As a confirmed carnivore, I really did enjoy the Bacon Jam and it was a welcome respite from the usual breakfast spreads that I generally consume. The next morning I decided to be daring and instead of pairing my stable seeni sambol with milk rice, I served myself a dollop of bacon jam. A good move indeed as the hot milk rice with the caramelised bacon and onions were like a match made in heaven. Despite the bacon jam having a use-by date of two weeks, my jar finished within 24 hours! That’s how much I enjoyed it.
Bacon Jam which is similar to the Austrian starter Verhackert is made through a process of cooking bacon along with onions, brown sugar along with vinegar and spices and Anjali’s unique bacon jam creation is the perfect foil for hot toast, canapé or even pizza topping.
The Bacon Jam by Anjo’s Dips and More is sold at the Home Grown Store. Delivery can be arranged. Check out Anjos.deli on Instagram.
