Shawarma is Love, Shawarma is Life

Shawarmas are an incredible part of Arab cuisine that's been born and bred within the Middle East and some going as far as Spain. The shawarma in far simpler terms would be a meaty grilled sandwich, but it's all about the meat and the intriguing flavours. Being an undeniably delicious street food around the Middle East and few parts of Europe, we've got this delicious goodness in and around Colombo's top Middle Eastern restaurants.

1. Arabian Knights

Spicy Syrian Chicken Shawarma (Rs. 460)

Now when it comes to presentation, this looked mouthwatering and smelled delicious! This particular shawarma was not your average shawarma, giving out a spicy chillie flavour, possibly from their secret Syriana sauce, complemented by the restaurant's signature garlic sauce - two of which you'd never find anywhere but at AK!

Mexicana Shawarma (Rs. 510)

Shawarma is known to be an Arab delicacy, however at AK, they've infused the flavours of Mexico into their legendary shawarma. I'm talking about the secret Mexicana sauce that sparks up the flavour of this shawarma.

Dubai Style Beef Shawarma (Rs. 490)

Now if you've never tried a shawarma before and need to taste it right back to its roots, this is what you need! The crisp of the jalapeño to the crunch of the juicy fries and not to mention their secret range of dips, this shawarma is a must try!

Chicken Shawarma (Rs. 300)

3. Bliss Lounge

Lamb Kofta Shawarma (Rs. 850)

Bliss Lounge is the perfect getaway from a hectic day and is a really good spot for chilling! It's got Middle Eastern interior, comfortable seating arrangements and privacy. The shawarma was of course, quite different from the rest. We tried the lamb kofta in which the thick meat was well marinated, soft and juicy. Although portions were huge it was quite difficult to take bites and we didn't extract the taste of any garlic sauce. Pickles and thick cut fries were served along with it, making it a rather filling meal!

4. Sheherezade at Galadari Hotel

Seafood Shawarma (Price on request)

Five star hotels always give you novel fusions and something out of the ordinary. And a seafood shawarma nails that category. In terms of flavour, it was delicious, however it was more of a seafood wrap than an actual shawarma. The portion was small and we expected more.

5. Hadramount Restaurant

Chicken Shawarma (Rs. 300)

This sandwich was wrapped in naan bread, making it heavy and soft in texture and quantity. However the meat was well spiced and complimented the fresh salad and garlic sauce within!

6. Hazari's

Beef Shawarma (Rs. 480)

The sandwich had slices of smokey beef, with lots of garlic and tomato sauce which can make it a little messy but what made it stand out was the mint they'd included.

7. August by Mama Aida's

Chicken & Beef Shawarma (Rs. 600 for chicken, beef)

Now shawarma has always been the wrapped sandwich you can have on the go or anywhere else for that matter. However at August, things were different as pictured above! Both meats had contrasting flavours and strong spices giving it the heat. This was served along with a bread basket and garlic sauce. Their takeout menu has the usual wrapped shawarma.
