What better way to beat the heat than to cool down with an icy cold beverage? These recipes are easy to make and they feature easy to find ingredients, which can be found in your kitchen or at the supermarket.
1. Watermelon and Basil Iced Tea (serves 8)
Ingredients
8 cups boiling water
8 tea bags (non-flavoured)
Watermelon, cut into small pieces
Fresh sprigs of basil
Sugar to taste
Instructions
Pour the 8 cups of boiling water into a tall glass pitcher.
Add the 8 teabags in, and allow the tea to brew for about 10 minutes.
After the tea has brewed, remove the teabags, and allow the tea to cool at room temperature.
Refrigerate for about 2 hours.
Before serving, add the watermelon and basil, and pour the iced tea over ice.
2. Cucumber and Lime Spritzer (serves 4)
Ingredients
350ml of soda water
¼ cup fresh lime juice (squeezed from 3 to 4 limes)
1 cucumber, thinly sliced
Instructions
Add the soda water, lime juice and sliced cucumber into a glass pitcher. Stir it for a for a few seconds.
Serve the drink over ice.
3. Sparkling Pineapple Ginger Ale (serves 4)
Ingredients
350ml of ginger ale
1 ½ cups of pineapple juice
4 pieces of freshly cut pineapple
Instructions
Add the ginger ale and pineapple juice into a glass pitcher. Stir for a few seconds to combine the two ingredients well.
Serve the drink over ice, with a piece of pineapple.
4. Easy Strawberry Slushie (serves 2-3)
Ingredients
1 pack of strawberries, cut and hulled
½ cup of water (or more if preferred)
Sugar or honey to taste
Ice cubes (as many as you like to get the desired consistency)
Instructions
Add all the ingredients to a blender, and blend until all the strawberries and ice have been blended together.
If the ice cubes which you added are not enough to get the desired consistency, add a few more cubes and blend again.
Pour the slushie into tall glasses and serve.
5. Mango Colada (serves 2)
Ingredients
½ cup of mango nectar or juice
½ cup of ripe mango pieces
½ cup of crushed ice
½ cup of coconut water (thambili)
1 tbsp of freshly squeezed lime juice
Instructions
Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend until the drink is thick and smooth. Add as much ice cubes as you like, but be sure to add just the right amount so as to not make the drink watery.
Pour into tall glasses and serve.
