Inventing new dishes and baking delicious treats runs in her family, so it comes as no surprise that she would open her very own business specializing in chocolate biscuit pudding, named The Pudding Stop Colombo. It wasn’t so long ago that Dilrukshi gave up her career in insurance to start this home based venture, along with the assistance and support from her daughter Minoli. TPSC made their debut at a beauty products and cosmetics sale held in late November last year, and from there on a small but growing customer base was built.
Currently, TPSC’s menu features six comforting variants, all of which I sampled recently for this review. The Classic is as classic as you can get. Layers of moist biscuits folded in chocolate buttercream and topped with chopped cashew nuts, this was tasty and simple with the buttercream just perfect in flavour and not being sickly sweet on your tongue. It’s a pretty simple dessert and one you’d be familiar with, considering it is a staple at any lunch or dinner party in a Sri Lankan home.
Despite having an aversion to raisins, I quite liked the Choco Raisin which features moist biscuits folded in the chocolate buttercream with double layers of raisins and chopped cashew nuts. Next, the Choco Chipper, which included double layers of vanilla and milk chocolate chips – a real treat finding little chips to bite into!
Featuring double layers of crushed KitKat chocolate, the KitKat Whopper is probably one of the best items on the menu, because of its subtle presence in the pudding, and really, how do you say no to KitKat in your chocolate biscuit pudding?
The Pudding Stop’s premium range offers two variants, which are the Ruby Red and the Dark Fantasy, the former which features rich layers of moist biscuits and chocolate buttercream topped with fresh halves of strawberries and double layers of dark chocolate shavings, and the latter which includes double layers of rich dark chocolate ganache and dark chocolate shavings. Whilst the Dark Fantasy is rather indulgent and should do well to satisfy your decadent cravings, the Ruby Red wins because the fresh strawberries lend a bit of sourness to the pudding, which makes for an interesting combination of flavours.
TPSC is also doing a limited edition range for Valentine’s Day, which will be available from February 1-15. The three variants are The Sweetheart (moist biscuits with chocolate buttercream and double layers of white chocolate ganache and fresh strawberry puree and topped with white chocolate chips), Mocha Love (includes triple layers of coffee cream, alongside the chocolate buttercream, and topped with chopped cashew nuts), and the Nutella Crunch (featuring Nutella chocolate cream, and topped with chocolate chips). Each pudding serves two.
TPSC’s puddings come in two sizes, which are a serving for 2-4, and a serving for 4-6, so be sure to specify which one you want when making an order. Dilrukshi sources ingredients and makes the puddings all by herself, guaranteeing the freshness and quality of the product. TPSC operates on a daily basis, and orders can be picked up or delivered an hour before making the order (this excludes the puddings from the premium range as Dilrukshi requires a day's notice before pickup). The pickup point is at Joseph Lane, Colombo 03, and for a fee, the puddings can be delivered as well.
For orders and enquiries, contact Dilrukshi on 0776093321 or e-mail [email protected]. The Pudding Stop Colombo is on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ThePuddingStopColombo), and Instagram (www.instagram.com/thepuddingstopcolombo).
