Joy:  A Triumph of Science and Hope

You know those stories that make you stop and think about how far we’ve come—and how much people had to fight to get us here? That’s exactly what Joy does. It dives into the incredible true story behind Louise Joy Brown, the world’s first “test-tube baby,” and the decade-long battle to make in vitro fertilization (IVF) a reality.

At the heart of it all is Jean Purdy, a young nurse and embryologist, working alongside scientist Robert Edwards and surgeon Patrick Steptoe. Together, they took on infertility—a subject that was steeped in stigma and controversy back in the 1970s. It wasn’t an easy ride. The trio faced backlash, scepticism, and endless setbacks, but their perseverance led to one of the most transformative breakthroughs in medical history.

What I loved about Joy is how it doesn’t just celebrate the science; it celebrates the people behind it. Watching their journey unfold made me realise how much determination and heart went into something that so many now take for granted. IVF isn’t just a medical procedure—it’s a lifeline that has brought joy (pun intended) to millions of families around the world.

If you’re in the mood for a story that’s equal parts inspiring and emotional, this is it. Joy is the kind of film that’ll have you rooting for the underdogs and marvelling at their grit. So, grab a cosy blanket, settle in, and prepare to be reminded of just how amazing human innovation can be.

Hidden Figures: The Unsung Heroines of Space Exploration

Some movies don’t just tell a story—they shine a light on history’s hidden heroes. Hidden Figures does exactly that, pulling back the curtain on the remarkable contributions of three African-American women who helped send a man into space while breaking down racial and gender barriers in the process.

Set during the Space Race, the film follows Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson—brilliant mathematicians who worked at NASA in the 1960s. Their calculations were crucial to some of the most significant space missions, but their achievements went largely unrecognized for decades. What struck me most was how these women navigated their personal and professional challenges with grace and grit, proving time and again that brilliance knows no bounds.

Like Joy, Hidden Figures is one of those feel-good movies that inspires and uplifts in equal measure. It’s not just a celebration of their groundbreaking work—it’s a tribute to their courage in standing tall against systemic discrimination. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll walk away with a newfound respect for the incredible women who changed the course of history.

If you haven’t seen Hidden Figures, add it to your watchlist immediately. It’s a story of resilience, innovation, and the undeniable power of believing in yourself—even when the odds are stacked against you.
