Our senses- sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch, help us to perceive and experience everything around us. They play important roles in our daily lives; appreciating a beautiful sunset, enjoying a delicious meal or communicating with your loved ones. Growing old is an inevitable part of life that cannot be avoided. Therefore, protecting our senses can not only enhance our overall well-being but also increase the quality of our life, by managing the effects of sensory loss with time.

Each sense helps us experience and appreciate the world in its own unique way. Taking care of these senses is important to stay connected to the world and it is way easier than you think! 

Sight 
For most people vision is the most important out of the senses; it is impossible to enjoy their hobbies without the ability to see, such as reading a book, watching TV or movies, or even watching your favorite sport. Losing the sense of vision can change your life profoundly.

You could start with your diet; have a healthy diet which includes food rich in vitamins A, C, and E such as leafy green vegetables, seeds, citrus fruits, nuts and legumes and in addition oily fish which contains omega-3 is nutritional for eye health.

When it comes to reading or working, proper lighting is crucial to avoid straining your eyes which can damage your eyesight. Also, managing screen time; Use blue light filters or glasses to reduce exposure to blue light which can contribute to eye strain.

Another important step is to schedule regular eye exams to monitor your eye health and address any issues early.


Hearing 
Listening to your favourite music playlist or hearing your loved ones talk highlights just how crucial our sense of hearing is to find joy and connect with others. It is important to protect your hearing to ensure you can continue to fully engage with these moments and to maintain your overall quality of life. 

Exposure to loud noise, whether from concerts, machinery, or everyday environments, can gradually impair your hearing aid and lead to hearing loss. To protect your hearing, it is essential to use ear protection, such as ear plugs, in noisy settings and keep the volume at a safe level when using headphones. 

Regular hearing check-ups can help detect early signs of hearing loss, allowing for timely intervention. Additionally, practising good hygiene and managing exposure to potentially damaging sounds can help preserve your hearing health.


Smell 
Our sense of smell enhances our experience of food, detecting hazards, and evoking memories. Protecting this sense is essential for maintaining our overall well-being and safety.  To safeguard your sense of smell, it is important to minimize exposure to strong chemicals, smoke, and pollutants, which can irritate or damage the delicate tissues in your nasal passages. 

Maintaining good nasal hygiene- saline nasal rinses can be used to flush out allergens and mucus. Additionally, managing allergies effectively can keep your sense of smell sharp. Regularly engaging with pleasant scents, such as essential oils or fresh herbs, can also help keep your sense of smell active and responsive.  


Taste 
Our sense of taste is essential for enjoying the flavours of our food. It lets you savour the sweetness of your birthday cake, and detect the subtle spices in a well-seasoned curry. 

To protect your sense of taste, you can start by practising good oral hygiene. This includes regular brushing and flossing, to prevent issues like gum disease or tooth decay that can impact your taste buds. Avoid excessive consumption of very spicy and acidic foods, as these can irritate your taste buds over time. 

Staying hydrated is important, as a dry mouth can dull your sense of taste. Additionally, visit your dentist regularly to address any underlying issues that might affect your taste. By keeping your mouth healthy and managing your diet, you can preserve your ability to fully enjoy the flavours in your meals.

Touch 
Our sense of taste allows us to feel the warmth of a loved one’s hug, the wind on our skin, or the texture of the soft blanket on a cold night. It allows us to experience the world around us. Therefore, protecting this sense is important in order to stay connected to the surroundings. 

You can start by taking care of your skin; avoiding harsh chemicals that can cause irritations and damage. Use moisturizers to keep your skin hydrated and follow a skincare routine.

Applying sunscreen regularly, helps you shield your skin from harmful UV rays, which can cause sunburn and prolonged sun exposure can damage your skin possibly causing skin cancer.  Consider wearing gloves when handling irritants or extreme temperatures.  Therefore, following these simple steps can ensure that your sense of touch remains sensitive and functional.

Safeguarding your five senses is essential to improve your overall well-being and enhance the quality of your life.  By taking these simple steps mentioned above,  you ensure that each sense continues to contribute fully to your daily experiences. Prioritize and embrace these habits to keep your senses sharp and your experiences enjoyable for years to come.
