From the runways to street style, the influence of popular media on what we wear has been profound. I myself was recently referring back to the TV show “The Expanse” (ended in 2022) to justify how its take on future suiting might be inspiring some trends today. Here’s a look at some of the most influential movies and TV shows in the 2020s so far that have created fashion trends, and a peek into what 2024 might bring.

1. Emily in Paris continued to be a major fashion influencer this decade. The show’s vibrant and eclectic style, curated by costume designer Patricia Field, brought bold colours and statement prints to the forefront even in the menswear industry. The character Emily’s wardrobe alone, filled with eye-catching outfits, inspired many to embrace a more adventurous and colourful approach to fashion that paved the way for the Barbie movie Pink-a-palooza that still exists today.

Valentino 2022/23 is a great reference for vibrant colours and bold prints reminiscent of “Emily in Paris.” The playful and eclectic styles were a hit on the runway and in stores for the brand and even influence local brands right now.

2. Euphoria has been a game-changer in terms of fashion, particularly among younger audiences. The show’s unique blend of edgy, glamorous, and sometimes provocative styles has inspired countless fashion trends. From glittery makeup to bold, experimental outfits, “Euphoria” has encouraged viewers to express their individuality through fashion.

A lot of US retail brands offer items inspired by Euphoria’s impact on gen-z culture and even fast-tracked the early 00’s grunge and denim trends in Colombo right now by mass market retailers. Now with Euphoria set to return soon, its impact on a generation to come is eagerly anticipated and a visual curiosity for industry experts already commenting on possible trends that will be seen.

3. Succession introduced the concept of “quiet luxury” to mainstream fashion. The RoyCo family wardrobes, characterized by simple designs, neutral colours, and sleek tailoring, epitomized understated elegance for men in an attractive way. This trend which is commonly known as the “old money” look locally, emphasizes quality and sophistication without overt branding… at least before fast fashion brands emulated it to death.

Saint Laurent collections in 22/23 are the perfect reference point to the “quiet luxury” trend now being overdone. Epitomised sleek tailoring, neutral palettes, and minimalist designs were key features that are still being emulated by emerging clothing brands in the Insta store sphere on the island.

4. Bridgerton continues to influence fashion with its “Regencycore” aesthetic with season 3 this year. The show’s elaborate costumes, featuring corsets, empire waist dresses, and intricate embroidery, have inspired modern interpretations of historical fashion even though our local ateliers might deign to admit it.

The influence of “Bridgerton” was evident in Dior’s past few collections, which featured Regency-inspired dresses, corsets, and delicate embroidery; even in the ateliers’ Indian market expansion. The romantic and historical elements were a nod to the show’s aesthetic even though brocade was emulated with Zardosi work and mirrors.

5. House of Gucci, released in late 2021 had a lasting impact on fashion. The movie’s portrayal of the glamorous and sometimes outrageous fashion of the Gucci family inspired many to embrace bold, luxurious styles. The film’s influence was evident in fashion collections that featured opulent fabrics, dramatic silhouettes, and statement accessories.

Inspired by “House of Gucci,” Gucci collections embraced opulence and drama making waves in the industry. Rich fabrics, intricate details, and statement pieces central to their design are now even bolder in this year’s offering highlighting their symbolic significance in culture while also drawing attention to fashion’s ability to create the extraordinary within the ordinary. As much as Tom Ford can be credited with a wide peak lapel, Gucci can now be credited with the sweeping emerald to olive suit trend replacing the aged blue blazer in most men’s wardrobes in town.

It’s amazing how movies and TV shows have always been a significant source of fashion inspiration, and the 2020s are going to be giving us references for decades to come. According to fashion analysts, the intersection of fashion and popular media is more influential than ever! As we move into late 2024, we can expect to see a blend of nostalgic and futuristic styles, driven by the diverse range of shows and films yet to be released. One can only hope the local options we will rely on will find inspiration rather than click copy and then paste as they have done many a time.
