To be amused or not

Oh! Colombo

It is always great to have a good chat and high tea with Trixie for many reasons. One is assured of great “short eats and cake,” properly brewed tea and just the two of us instead of many people, all trying to talk louder than the other and bragging about themselves.  So much so that that when you return home you still have the useless chatter ringing in your ear and feel like you have been pulled out of a tumble dryer.  It takes about another hour of quiet time at home to get back to normal

Trixie is an observant woman, who has never bothered to get to know the newly emerged socialites in the city.  Rather, she has always opted to move about with quality people who knew what they were about, whether they had money or not, instead of the no brainers with flashy  money.

It is great to spend a couple of hours chatting with Trixie. She had just read in a tabloid an article of a woman who had described her friend’s virtues of high breeding, great values, sincerity and honesty. Trixie was honestly surprised that there yet were such naïve women around. “If anyone can actually pen the wonders of such a person, then that person has to be a robot and be modeled by a scientist” said Trixie, who has heard this wonder woman thrashing the writer, saying awful and horrid things about her.

Trixie giggled and said “let’s hope she never finds out what was said to me about ten years ago when I wanted to invite the two of them to lunch.  I was told by the admirer that at no time in her life would she ever want to be in a tête-à-tête with the admired and, therefore, had to turn down the invite.  Ten years on, when going through a magazine I see some photographs of them dancing together at a large bash and now she is professing the virtues of the woman.”

Trixie was also puzzled about a wedding invite that was circulating in town, a hot topic at the dinner Maleesha had invited her to the night before. Not having moved out of her comfort zone of friends for many years and being unaware of the new-fangled wedding invites and customs, she was puzzled to hear of an invite that is actually not an invitation to the event but an announcement of the event.  Perplexed by this form of invitation she sought more details from her hostess Maleesha.

Maleesha had said that the wedding was to be held overseas.  Since she had received a very beautifully designed invite to many functions and as it was nearby, Maleesha had decided on making the overseas trip combining some shopping  and enjoying the celebrations.  Maleesha had phoned a dear friend to discuss what clothing and jewelry to pack, when she was asked whether she had received a ‘keep the date free’ notice a couple of months earlier, along with a set of spoons or some sort of a gift with the invite.  Maleesha, who had received neither the ‘keep the date free’ notice nor the token gift, said she did not. In that case, she was informed, you are actually not meant to participate in the celebrations and the invitation you have been sent is only an announcement of the event. Therefore, please do not come as you will not be welcome. Maleesha was at a loss for words and is still trying to work it out.

Trixie had asked Maleesha whether she checked on the veracity of what was told to her with either a family member of the couple or the wedding hosts.  Maleesha had not done so as she felt a bit awkward to follow up on something of this nature.  Instead, she called her travel agent and cancelled her flight and hotel reservations.

One does not know whether to be amused or not with such stories but more and more bizarre events seem to be happening all the time…….
