‘Tinker bell’ amongst the friends

In one’s life, one has very close friends, a bonding which makes the whole world different.

Friendship is a stronger form of an interpersonal bond than an association; enjoyment of each other’s company, absolute trust, and the ability to be oneself, express one’s feelings, and make mistakes without fear of judgment from the friend. Such rare friendships are formed at birth with your siblings, or later on when you are growing up and even a little later in life. It certainly does not happen in a flash or overnight as before you form this sort of absolute trust and bonding you have to get to know the person well. Once you find a true friend, your life does become a better one.

We must also be aware that this is a rare commodity, especially in this village of Colombo, where many people are not genuine and are green eyed monsters embittered with life and everything around them and, therefore, their biggest thrill in life is to destroy anyone or anything around them.  Additionally, one must also realize that all members in a family do not necessarily have great attachment to each other and that there exists among siblings rivalry and hatred that cannot be understood by an outsider.  To come across a close knit family with great bonding is a joy.

In this restless world there are too many unhappy and lonely people.  The Tinker Bells in this world are aplenty, lost in a world of misery and unhappiness in their marriages.  Looking for some kind of diversion in their lives, give them some solace and hope to pull themselves through. Instead of waking up in the morning and smelling the coffee and getting a grip with life by helping themselves and accepting the situation they are in, they love to feel that they are such good, honest people who are now victims in this cruel world and that only the all mighty knows what good persons they are.

The one fatal night always comes when they meet the man of their dreams and decide that this would be the ideal man for them as he makes them feel suddenly alive again. They get all awe struck and feel that life is worth living after all.  All of us know the feeling of falling in love - the songs you hear have meaning, it is wonderful to wake up since you have been dreaming of him and the feel good factor is so high that a look in the mirror endorses the feeling and makes one feel that there is a new meaning to life.

Fortunately the Casanovas are aplenty in this village. They are single footloose and fancy free and do what they please.  Unfortunately, they are not looking for steady or long relationships. Being single and living on their own they have enough prey, the desperate and neglected women who need to be looked after.

The trouble begins when the Tinker Bells decide to get possessive and almost manic with their Casanovas and the more neglected they are the worse they get. All they wish to do is to come over to the Casanovas’ homes and look after them and to be in their arms and enjoy whatever love they receive and then go back to their miserable lives at home. All of this is worth it to them as they are in love.

The snag is that they have to get a Casanova for themselves and one of the big problems is that apart from the Casanovas having no interest in them, they also have friends. When the Tinker Bells realize they are not getting the attention they desire from the Casanovas, they start attacking their friends. Even though the Tinker Bells act as if they are paragons of virtue they start making insinuations about the Casanovas’ friends and tell the Casanovas how they protect the friends by defending them, including coming to their defense if a gay relationship is alleged.

Here is where the friend situation comes in. True friends have no secrets, they know every single detail about each other and support and respect each other. Here comes the pathetic situation. The Tinker Bells think that they have some great attributes and defend people’s lives and their resputations, instead of realizing that the Casanovas of this world are not interested in them; those who come with too much baggage and interfere with their friends.
