Loves to be carried and petted often and is as picky as a little child about his veggies. He also loves to seek attention and complains if he gets none. Considers himself to be the baby of the household, and expects to be treated like one too!
Pet's details
Name: Cubbie
Breed: Maltese - Poodle
Age: 7 years
Owner: Cherisha
What's the significance of the name you've given him?
When I was younger I used to watch a cartoon called Gummy Bears. There was one little gummy bear named Cubbie Gummy. I thought that name was so cute – I ended up giving that name to him.
What is a typical day like for Cubbie?
Eating, sleeping, going on walks, barking at anyone and everything that passes our house. He also likes to bark when he hears his “brother” barking even though he has no clue what’s going on.
What are mealtimes and bathtimes like?
He’s a picky eater. He also likes to be invited to come to eat. If I don’t call him to come eat – he will sit there and watch me without ever approaching his bowl of food. He also prefers to be hand fed.
He hates getting a bath. Once he’s done with his bath he comes out running and goes around in circles barking in frenzy. Then he starts trying to “attack” everyone. Being less than a foot in height, it’s kind of hard to do. But he likes to pretend that he can and that he has been wronged and now everyone else in the house has pay for it.
Does he do anything out of the ordinary that fascinates you?
He and his “brother” like to howl at anything with a siren than passes by. But unfortunately Cubbie doesn’t really know how to howl. So when his “brother” is howling, Cubbie barks in a high pitched voice pretending to howl- a noise which is really annoying. He is also very possessive of my husband. My husband can’t even spend time with my children without Cubbie sitting in between them. Cubbie also likes to think that he’s the baby in the house, so if we ever carry one of my kids, Cubbie wants to be carried too. So most times, we have to carry a child in one arm and Cubbie on the other at the same time.
What annoys him the most?
He has to wear a harness because he pulls so much when we walk him that he ends up choking himself, but he hates wearing it. So when it’s time for a walk and we try to put it on, he goes to hide under the table or under a chair. We walk our dogs four times a day, every day, and yet after all these years, he never gives up hope that we will allow him to have a harness free walk.
What is his most favourite fun time activity?
Going for a walk, going anywhere in the car, going to the dog park, being acknowledged that he is the baby of the house.
What is the naughtiest thing he has done?
If we are ever gone from the house for too long, he likes to destroy the furniture and tear it up. He still does this. He has also tried to run away. Not on purpose because he was busy chasing birds and ended up running more than half a mile to the main street. What was bad was that I was running after him and shouting his name the entire time, but he kept ignoring me. He could have been hit by a car. That was by far the naughtiest thing he has done.
How did you find him?
We needed a “brother” or a “sister” for my other puppy, so on Christmas Eve I went to the animal shelter and saw this ball of fur with a nose. He was so matted and dirty that was really all I could see. But when he saw me his tail wagged and he seemed so happy when we got him out of his kennel for a “meet and greet”. I decided he was the one. Best decision ever.
What is he most afraid of?
He’s scared of fireworks, thunder and lightning. He also gets scared when he chokes on his leash and starts coughing. When he’s scared all he wants is to be carried.
How does he react when you return home after a long day?
He starts jumping and barking. If for some reason we forget to acknowledge him, he barks until we pet him before we do anything else. This is not always a good thing, especially if my kids are asleep.
What makes him the best?
He loves to cuddle.
What was the most unforgettable moment and you shared with him?
When we got him he was quite matted and dirty. Even the vet asked me why I chose that dog when there were so many other cute (and much cleaner) ones to choose from. Once we got him home and gave him a bath and a haircut, we couldn’t believe how cute he was.
