The Responsible Fashion Movement has a global agenda to impose progressive thinking, where mindsets are changed, practices implemented and fashion consumer made aware of their choices
It’s an action point to bring about Responsibility, Responsiveness and Accountability to the fashion and design industry to create a good and a responsible fashion, which should become a 'new normal' in fashion design.
This is Responsible Fashion Movement is an important part of the initiative called Green Conscious and Earth Sensitive program.
Today, with the launch of The Responsible Fashion Movement also saw the introduction of Sri Lanka’s First Fashion Hackathon in association with The Design Development Corporation, MAS, Swimweek Colombo and Colombo Fashion Week and Hilton Colombo was the host hotel.
The objective behind the First Fashion Hackathon was to involve design students, designers and industry stakeholders to bring in functionality and practicality based on the knowledge that was imparted in the Forum that preceded it.
The task to hack at the first fashion hackathon was THE MAKING OF THE GREEN TEE, it saw the participation of students from the University of Moratuwa, Raffles, The Open University, past students of other fashion schools, Sri Lankan designers and MAS designers. This ongoing program will see the creation of the greenest possible Green T-shirt by various teams.
“There is so much knowledge available, yet the need is to act and create fashion products which are green conscious and earth sensitive, everyone knows that the fashion industry has a negative impact on the environment. Can we in Sri Lanka take the lead through The Responsible Fashion Movement and show the region how knowledge can be converted into green thinking solutions. My heart is to involve more and more students into this program so we can create a generation of green-conscious designers, hence we did this hackathon which will continue to bring real time solutions.”
Says Ajai V Singh, the visionary and leader behind The Responsible Fashion Movement.
The MAS sustainability team led by Sharika Fernando had experts Suneth De Silva and Romayne Anthony who conducted workshops along with the Responsible Fashion movement team.
“Designers above all have the power to influence and change the new world we are challenged with. MAS is happy to partner with The Responsible Fashion Movement and is conscious of this ‘new normal’ and we hope this first Forum is the beginning of a revolution,”
says Sharika Senanayake, the Director of Environmental Sustainability, MAS Capital.
The key participants of the first hackathon were students led by the faculties of the University of Moratuwa, Raffles Colombo and the Open University of Colombo, who will work with existing designers to create solutions in the form of creating The Perfect Green Tee. The products created will be evaluated and one team will be declared a winner of this hackathon. The winner will then go on to present their design at Emerging Designer Showcase at Colombo Fashion Week and will receive the opportunity to have their design manufactured and marketed internationally.
