The ELDS of St. Peter’s College presents ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’

The English Literary Drama Society (ELDS) of St. Peter’s College along with the Really Useful Group is getting ready to present the award-winning musical ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ this January.

Based on the Bible’s Book of Genesis, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat revolves around Joseph and his 11 brothers. The 11 brothers hate Joseph for his ‘coat of many colours’ which is a symbol of their father’s preference for him. They believe that Joseph will eventually rule over them and in order to prevent him from fulfilling this dream, the brothers sell him as a slave and Joseph ends up in Egypt. The brothers and their wives then inform Jacob that his ‘favourite son’ has been killed. While in Egypt, Joseph works for Egyptian millionaire Potiphar who later finds out that he is carrying on with his wife. This incident leads to several unexpected twists and turns in Joseph’s life before he reunites with Jacob once again.

Directed by Jehan Bastians, Neidra Williams (Silent Hands Productions) and Charith De Silva, the play will feature current and old boys from St. Peter’s College along with invited guests from various schools to play the female roles in ensemble. The ELDS of St. Peter’s College has staged two full length public performances – A Christmas Carol (2010) and A Christmas Wish (2013) over the past 5 years.

This play is a musical or operetta with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Its family-friendly storyline, universal themes and catchy music have resulted in numerous productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
