This week on WTF, I want to speak about a great friend of mine and a talented personality who is also quite lovable. A well-known voice on radio airwaves and one of the leading faces for the world known group Soul Sounds, Shey (Shehara) put together her first show at Park Street last Saturday.

The show was a musical journey comrising varieties of everyone's favourite, and the evening was a close circle of well wishers and lovers of Shey's voice. The hour of singing started off with Ave Maria - Caccini and O Mio Babbino Caro - Puccini, with Soundarie David Rodrigo on the piano to give the right start to a evening that took us on an emotional rollercoaster.

“I'm happy she did this, she is very talented and an international stage will recognize her soon,” said Soundarie who works with Shey on a daily basis because of Soul Sounds.

The song that followed after broke me, as it was a dedication to my mother and hers, as my mom has always loved the way Shey sings, and brings feeling to her music. The song was  “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” which is an all time favourite of my mom's, and I thank Shey for it.

The night featured songs such as "That’s the Glory of Love" where she invited Mary Anne David, to accompany her, as her teacher who gave her the correct foundation for her singing , and many others. "My Funny Valentine", "Try A Little Tenderness" - inspired by Michael Buble, "Paper Moon", "Nella Fantasia - Ennio Morricone", and a tribute to the late Whitney Houston with "Didn’t We Almost Have It All" and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go".

And then Shey took a diva break for a costume change, and I asked her about what music means to her, and her reply was felt in every song she sang that night. “Music does not simply mean notes on a stave. Each note contains a thought, an emotion, a message. And when you blend that together in perfect harmony, it creates something truly magical.”

Shey has a very supportive family and it was a pleasant surprise to see her two sisters, Samindri and Sushara joining her on stage for an a-capella version of “Somewhere” and Shey who is very spoilt at home and called by her pet name “Podda” had to sing the song her dad has wanted to hear for a long time and his wish was granted with tears of joy filling the moment with an outstanding performance of “Power of Love" by Jennifer Rush.

Shey said “My night will not be complete without my favourite and loved artist Michael Jackson” and sang her renditions of “Ben" and "Music and Me". With her soul sisters in the audience (members of Soul Sounds) and with Christo Prince on the drums and Pradeep Rodrigo on base, you have to have some “Oh Happy Day” to make the night complete and for some final touches she added some Christmas into her lineup with all of us singing "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas".

“Singing to me means reaching out, connecting and communicating. It has been an integral part of my life and gives me great joy to share that love everyone,” expressed Shey.

A big thank you to Romesh Attapattu from Capello Salons for all the wonderful hair and makeup in making Shey look great that night. We are wishing her all the success, and today on WTF, we bring you some of the best moments with our video produced by You're My Favorite.
