Who is Freddy?
Director Feroze Kamardeen’s first full play was written in the early 2007’s about a local politician rising through the ranks to the highest officer of the land. Initially titled ‘Rise to Power’, it was later changed to ‘Thank you for Voting’ but today it’s most popularly known as the “Pusswedilla plays”. The play has run for 8 years and been performed to full houses in over 56 performances.
Today, his latest play is titled ‘Freddy’. When asked what the play is all about, Feroze is rather vague about the plot. “Freddy is a play comprising of many other plays” he divulges, “One of the things I wanted to do with Freddy was to bring to my audiences a type of humour which is quite different to Pusswedilla. In Freddy I use no Sinhalese and all the plays derive their humour from very different sources. It is usually a very absurd situation or a character that drives the humour in each piece”.
Freddy brings together a stellar cast of 6 who are well reputed comic actors in the industry; Dominic Kellar, who rose to fame playing the character of H.E. Chaminda Pusswedilla, Gehan Blok, who played Robert Westernthinking, Dino Corera, Daminda Wijayaratne, Sean Amarasekera and Mohammed Adamally. Over the course of the play, the actors will play 35 different characters and the audience will be taken through a series of unpredictable events from unusual bank robberies to botched up surgeries.
Whether it’s a live interview with a horse or the most unusual marriage service in the world Freddy promises to be a play packed with laughter and is not to be missed!
FREDDY will take the stage from November 24 - 27 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre. Box plan and tickets will be open from November 15, at the theatre.
*This play is more suitable for adults.
