Blending archaeological motifs and spiritual symbolism, Gayan Hemarathne's debut solo exhibition, Magga: A Journey of Wisdom, offers a meditative exploration of the Noble Eightfold Path in Buddhist philosophy. His carefully structured compositions, shaped by his background in engineering and archaeology, resonate with a quiet intensity, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and connect with the deeper meanings behind each piece. Each of the twelve artworks charts a different stage of spiritual and ethical growth, weaving ancient wisdom into contemporary expression. Hosted at Curado Art Space, from 3-9 May, Magga encourages moments of mindfulness in a world often driven by speed and distraction.

1. Your exhibition “Magga” is inspired by the Noble Eightfold Path in Buddhist philosophy. Can you tell us what drew you to this theme and how it shaped your creative process?
Magga was inspired by my personal journey and the Noble Eightfold Path. It helped me create art with mindfulness, compassion, and deep awareness, making each painting feel alive. Painting became a meditation for me.

2. You’ve titled the exhibition “A Journey of Wisdom.” What kind of inner or outer journey did you personally embark on while creating these works?

While creating MAGGA: A Journey of Wisdom, I went on both an inner and outer journey. Inside, I thought deeply about my life and tried to follow the Noble Eightfold Path. Outside, I visited ancient Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka, where I found peace and inspiration. These experiences helped shape my paintings.

3. Each of your twelve artworks explores a different aspect of spiritual growth and ethical living. Could you share a story behind one piece that feels especially personal to you?
One painting that feels very personal to me is about "Right Effort." While working on it, I faced many challenges in my own life. I had to stay strong and keep moving forward without giving up. This painting reminds me that true growth comes from trying again and again with a good heart.

4. Coming from an engineering background and currently studying archaeology, your approach to art is quite interdisciplinary. How do these fields influence the structure, symbolism, and technique in your work?
My engineering background helps me plan and structure my artworks carefully. Studying archaeology teaches me to see the deep meaning behind symbols and history. Both fields help me create art that is well-organized, meaningful, and full of hidden stories.

5. Your art balances visual precision with spiritual symbolism. How do you find harmony between analytical structure and emotional expression in your creative practice?
I start with a clear plan, using my analytical side to build the structure of the artwork. Then, I let my emotions guide the colors, textures, and feelings. By balancing planning and feeling, I find harmony in my art.

6. Geometric forms and archaeological motifs play a strong role in this body of work. Can you elaborate on your choice of visual language and the messages it conveys?
I use geometric forms and archaeological motifs to connect the past with the present. These shapes and symbols remind us of ancient wisdom and cultures. Through them, I want to show that the lessons from history still have meaning today.

7. As a debut solo exhibition, “Magga” marks a significant milestone in your artistic journey. What emotions are you carrying into this moment, and what do you hope audiences take away from the experience?
I feel a mix of excitement and nervousness as I share my work for the first time. I hope the audience feels inspired and reflective, taking away a deeper understanding of spiritual growth and the importance of living with intention.

8. Curado Art Space has become a hub for meaningful contemporary exhibitions. What drew you to this venue, and how do you feel it complements your vision for “Magga”?
I was drawn to Curado Art Space because it’s known for hosting thoughtful and meaningful exhibitions. The space feels like a perfect fit for Magga because it encourages deep reflection and invites visitors to connect with the art in a personal way.

9. In today’s fast-paced world, your art invites viewers to pause and reflect. What role do you believe contemporary art can play in encouraging mindfulness and introspection?
I believe contemporary art can help people slow down and think deeply. It creates a space for mindfulness, where viewers can reflect on their own lives and find moments of calm in a busy world.

10. Looking beyond this exhibition, how do you envision your artistic path evolving? Are there new themes or philosophies you're eager to explore next?
Looking ahead, I want to explore more themes about archaeology, Buddhist philosophy, and our connection to history. I’m also excited to focus on transformation and how it shapes our lives and identities.
